Rico, John
[893]
[RICO-1981-893]
YESTERDAY IT WAS THE MAN WITH THE HOE - On several occasions I have referred back to famed poet Edwin Markham and his poem, "The Man With the Hoe." Markham, who spent his boyhood days in rural Vacaville, saw first-hand the strenuous efforts needed to till the soil. The first two lines in that poem read:

Remembering the Good Old School Days
/
Rico, John
[876]
[RICO-1981-876]
School days, good old golden rule days. An estimated 9,000 Vacaville area elementary and high school students will go back to their classes next Tuesday. No one is able to predict whether registrations will be up or down. With home building here at a near stagnant position, there actually could be a decline in registrations for the fall semesters.

The Origin Of Names
/
Wichels, Ernest
[769]
[WICHELS-1963-769]
Most of us take names for granted--we're speaking of geographical locations. Yet behind some of these names are interesting stories--oftentimes legends--which would fill pages of type. Today we'll mention a few in the local area.

Today I am announcing my retirement from this column. It has been a source of great pleasure, and knowing there are many good stories yet to uncover, I feel some regret.

Civil War becomes center of Solano life
/
Delaplane, Kristin
[318]
[ECHOS-1996-318]
The Civil War was the source of much local news in 1863. Pearon's traveling exhibition, "Mirror of the War," was up for three days in Suisun and allowed citizens to see and hear accounts of the war. Local militia groups were formed in the event they were needed for the war effort. It was announced that the Vallejo Rifle Co [...]

[WAYITWAS-2008-820]
In my last column I talked about nearby Cordelia receiving a post office in 1865 because it was on the stage route from Benicia to Sacramento and Suisun received its mail from that source until receiving its own post office in 1887.

Before I launch into this column I need to let several people who e-mailed me with questions know that my trusty old portable computer went up in smoke, and I lost all the questions. So, if I haven't answered you in the last month or so, try again.

Currey found himself between squabblers
/
Goerke-Shrode, Sabine
[611]
[WAYITWAS-2005-611]
One of the prominent names among early Solano settlers is that of Judge John Currey. Currey brought his young family to Benicia in 1852, working as a lawyer on the disputes surrounding the Mexican land grants. After the Spanish missions had been dissolved in 1835, Mexican citizens received large land grants. The boundaries of these grants were loosely defined.

Chipping away at island's name
/
Bowen, Jerry
[185]
[WAYITWAS-2003-185]
Have you ever wondered how a certain location on a map came to be named? Maybe not. But more often than not, a fascinating story unravels when researching the origin of the name of an island, town, road, or canyon. Such was the case of a little-known island at the southern extreme of Solano County.
