The railroad ferry 'Solano' still lives
/
Bowen, Jerry
[107]
[WAYITWAS-2002-107]
A few weeks ago, I wrote a story about the first run of the railroad ferryboat, Solano. From that article I received a fair amount of e-mail and queries about the ferry. One of the most interesting was from a Thomas Rubarth in Arizona who had done considerable research on the Solano.

Delving into Winters story with Vacaville
/
Bowen, Jerry
[551]
[WAYITWAS-2004-551]
The town of Winters, located just across the Yolo County line, shares its history with Vacaville in many ways. The earliest inhabitants of the area were Indians known as the Wintun, also known as Southern Patwin or Southern Wintun. They moved into the southern Sacramento Valley from the north some 1,200 years ago.

Birds Landing tavern shot full of memories
/
Bowen, Jerry
[584]
[WAYITWAS-2005-584]
I just have to tell you about a great trip into the past last weekend. Ted Haskins, Jesse Hayden and I headed to Birds Landing last weekend to continue our ongoing, self-appointed quest to videotape as much of Solano County's history as we can. We were to meet one of this column's readers, Evelina Lawrence, who had been a resident of the town back in the 1950s. She lives in Oakland now, but she had many fond memories of the town she lived in as a child and a photo album from which we were to re-photograph pictures [...]

Mare Island fostered many stories
/
Bowen, Jerry
[187]
[WAYITWAS-2003-187]
Last March, my fellow history columnist Goerke-Shrode, Sabine wrote an article on Mare Island, but I thought I would expand on it a little with a few stories about the ships and men who were part of the island's history, similar to "the rest of the story" as radio commentator Paul Harvey would say.

Rhyme and reason behind early Solano poet
/
Bowen, Jerry
[544]
[WAYITWAS-2004-544]
I don't suppose that most newcomers to Vacaville have ever heard of Edwin Markham. Some may have heard of the poem, "Man With a Hoe," but don't know that a man who once lived in the now-contentious Lagoon Valley wrote it. So, let's look at a little history of Charles Edwin Anson Markham and some interesting contradictions.

Colorful adventurer worked the spectrum from druggist to a blockade runner
/
Bowen, Jerry
[47]
[WAYITWAS-2000-47]
One of the lesser known characters that once lived in Vaca Valley was a man known as Capt. Richard H. Chinn. What little is known about him came mostly from stories he told about his life to friends [...]

Faded Evidence of Former Winery Exists
/
Bowen, Jerry
[684]
[WAYITWAS-2006-684]
I briefly mentioned an early stone building on a small separate seven and one-half acre parcel of land belonging to Samuel Martin who built the Stonedene mansion in 1861 in my last article. I also speculated in previous chapters of this article this was also the actual site of the Santa Eulalia Mission and that one of Indians in charge of the rancheria/mission was Chief Solano and that it was here that he returned to live out his final days.

Trevails of a desperate wagon train
/
Bowen, Jerry
[131]
[WAYITWAS-2002-131]
In the first part of this tale, John Udell and his wife Emily left their Missouri home in 1858 by wagon train for California. They intended to live out their lives with their son Oliver who had settled in Allendale in 1850.

Pruning key to a successful harvest
/
Goerke-Shrode, Sabine
[64]
[WAYITWAS-2001-64]
Spring has finally arrived. Seeing all the fruit trees in bloom once again is truly one of the wonderful advantages of living in Solano County. My personal favorites are the peach and nectarine trees with their pink blossoms. Together with the yellow mustard growing underneath and a deep blue sky above, I always think of an impressionist painting.
