Humble beginnings for Vaca poet / Goerke-Shrode, Sabine [86] [WAYITWAS-2001-86]
Few people born in Vacaville or who at least lived here for some time during the 19th century have become as widely known and revered as poet Edwin Markham.

Rhyme and reason behind early Solano poet / Bowen, Jerry [544] [WAYITWAS-2004-544]
I don't suppose that most newcomers to Vacaville have ever heard of Edwin Markham. Some may have heard of the poem, "Man With a Hoe," but don't know that a man who once lived in the now-contentious Lagoon Valley wrote it. So, let's look at a little history of Charles Edwin Anson Markham and some interesting contradictions.

Unearthing fact and fiction in life of poet / Bowen, Jerry [549] [WAYITWAS-2004-549]
In my last column we saw that Markham had run away and was gone for about six months and had finally realized his dream to attend Vacaville's California College. During my continuing research about Markham, I found the following in notes supplied to the Vacaville Heritage Council by J. W. Hawkins: The reference isn't noted, but I suspect it came from "The Unknown Edwin Markham" by Lois Filler.

Vacaville's Shaky Beginning / Bowen, Jerry [15] [WAYITWAS-2000-15]
For all you history buffs in the area it is a well-known fact that on Aug. 21, 1850, Juan Manuel Vaca sold nine square miles of land for $3,000 to William McDaniel, with the provision that one square mile be designated as the new town of Vacaville. In addition, McDaniel was to deed back to Vaca 1,055 lots in the new town. Right?

The Senator Who Is Mr. Solano County / Rico, John [893] [RICO-1981-893]
YESTERDAY IT WAS THE MAN WITH THE HOE - On several occasions I have referred back to famed poet Edwin Markham and his poem, "The Man With the Hoe." Markham, who spent his boyhood days in rural Vacaville, saw first-hand the strenuous efforts needed to till the soil. The first two lines in that poem read:

Care of indigent patients had rude beginnings / Goerke-Shrode, Sabine [555] [WAYITWAS-2004-555]
Increasing population numbers during the 1860s in Solano County made the creation of a central institution to treat ill residents a necessity. While patients normally were nursed at home by dedicated family members, assisted by a doctor, those who could neither afford medical care nor didn't have family, needed another source of care.

At the beginning of the 20th century, women all over the country founded women's service clubs to improve their communities. In upper Solano County, the three most prominent clubs were the Dixon Women's Improvement Club, Vacaville's Saturday Club, and Suisun/Fairfield's Wednesday Club.
