Last year, during the Solano County Historical Society's Pioneer Days Celebration, I was very fortunate to meet Betty Davis who lives in Fairfield. While we were talking, she asked me if I would be interested in a family history that was written by her mother, Edith Lucille Venning.

'There was a big Chinese laundry in town where the McBride Senior Center is. It was called Quong Sing Chinese Laundry. Two or three people worked in the washroom and there were about four ironers.

In the 19th century, many Chinese, most of them from Southeast China, came to America's western shores seeking their fortunes. The greatest influx came when they heard of the discovery of gold in California. During this era, many Chinese and others found disappointment in the gold fields, and were attracted to Solano's rich farm land.

Information for this article came from the Vacaville Heritage Council, Solano Genealogical Society and the Solano Historian. Second of two parts Historian Wood Young found these tidbits in an 1871 issue of the Weekly Solano Republican. Printed business-card-size advertisements for local doctors along with advertisements for patent medicines that cured consumption and seemingly every other wretched ailment that could befall a human being.
