Benicia was gearing up for its city elections in May. A meeting was called for nomination of city officers. The meeting was held in the Democratic Club Room located over the El Dorado Saloon. To be voted for were the offices of mayor, marshal, treasurer, assessor (the editors remarked that the assessor did anything generally but assess), and four councilmen.

Our recent local elections with low voter turnout and disinterested citizens had me look at earlier elections in Solano County. With today's well-regulated and orderly campaign and voting system in mind, 19th century elections read more like a riot.

Information for this article came from the Vacaville Heritage Council, Solano Genealogical Society and the Solano Historian. Second of two parts Historian Wood Young found these tidbits in an 1871 issue of the Weekly Solano Republican. Printed business-card-size advertisements for local doctors along with advertisements for patent medicines that cured consumption and seemingly every other wretched ailment that could befall a human being.

Rumors of big boxing match had area buzzing / Goerke-Shrode, Sabine [696] [WAYITWAS-2007-696]
In the spring of 1889, the area was buzzing with rumors about a local boxing match to be held between two of the Bay Area's champions, Joe "Chrysanthemum" Choynski and "Gentleman Jim' Corbett.
