Fifty years since the birth of the Monticello Dam / Dingler, Nancy [736] [RETROSPECT-2007-736]
This month, Solano Irrigation District celebrated 50 years since the completion of the Monticello Dam, which forms Lake Berryessa. In the process of creating the lake, a rich and fertile valley was lost, along with the small town of Monticello, which had been established in 1882.

In 1942, Fairfield was a sleepy agricultural dot on the landscape. Ragsdale airfield, as it first was known, was originally planned to be temporary. However, the mission changed as things do in wartime and the airfield became the Fairfield-Suisun Army Air Base.

The gold rush of 1849 created a massive migration. People from all walks of life and from around the world made their way to the rich gold fields of California. After months of walking across the country from Missouri, Luzena, along with her husband, Mason, and two small children were in sight of the promised land.

Monticello's demolition aided farmers / Goerke-Shrode, Sabine [102] [WAYITWAS-2002-102]
So far this winter, rainfall has been plentiful, filling creeks and reservoirs. If the trend continues, once again we will be able to admire Lake Berryessa's Glory Hole spilling over and be secure in the knowledge that this summer there will be enough water for farm crops and households alike.

The Patwins, the settlers and Lake Solano / Dingler, Nancy [491] [RETROSPECT-2004-491]
For thousands, if not millions, of years Putah Creek flowed through Berryessa Valley, and out Devil's Gate, meandering along the border between Yolo and Solano counties, on its way to the Delta. By 1957, a radical change would alter the ancient landscape.

Mare Island shipyard celebrates 150th birthday / Dingler, Nancy [540] [RETROSPECT-2004-540]
This past week, Mare Island celebrated its 150th anniversary. The shipyard facility closed in March 1996. According to Sue Lemmon and Ernie Wichels, in their book, "Sidewheelers to Nuclear Power," Mare Island was established in 1854, and was the oldest naval installation in the Pacific.
