Abstract: This past week, Mare Island celebrated its 150th anniversary. The shipyard facility closed in March 1996. According to Sue Lemmon and Ernie Wichels, in their book, "Sidewheelers to Nuclear Power," Mare Island was established in 1854, and was the oldest naval installation in the Pacific.
