This report is concerned with the status of historic sites and places located in the Central Solano County Planning Area. which includes generally the communities of Fairfield, Suisun City, Green Valley, Suisun Valley, Rockville and Cordelia. When we use terms in this report such as "the Fairfield area," "the planning area" or "the area" we are actually referring collectively to all of these communities in central Solano County. This report is submitted to the Fairfield City Planning Commission to implement recommendations of the Open Space Plan and ConservatIon Element of the Central Solano County General Plan..

The first step toward a Fairfield Civic Center began on November 24, 1953, when the City CouncIl voted to proceed with purchase from the Federal Government of a thirty-three acre site just north of the City's Central Business District. This site was well known as Wateman Park and had been a World War II temporary housing project of 315 unots with a central recreation center and cafeteria. This report presents the findings of a survey of cultural resources located within and adjacent to the proposed downtown redevelopment project area in Fairfield. Although there are no definitive project boundaries at this time, the area of potential impact is not to exceed that shown on the map entitled "Cultural Resources Survey Area -- Central Fairfield." The original historic grid of Fairfield lies entirely within the proposed project area, as do annexations of the immediate post-war period (to the north and east) and more recent annexations (to the south and west).
