Early pioneer's wandering spirit brought him here / Bowen, Jerry [7] [WAYITWAS-2000-7]
Before there was a Vacaville, there had to be people. In some of my articles I will introduce you to a few of the people that were a part of its beginnings, how they got here and events that were a part of Solano County and Vacaville's history.

Early California gold rush pioneer / Bowen, Jerry [125] [WAYITWAS-2002-125]
Some of Solano County's early residents are relatively unknown locally but when you look into their past you find that they left an impressive trail of actions and deeds.

Trek to California was arduous / Goerke-Shrode, Sabine [118] [WAYITWAS-2002-118]
Whenever I read about the efforts early pioneers made to reach California, I am awed at their dogged spirit and their willingness to accept incredible hardships.

Pioneer Swift persevered despite the odds / Goerke-Shrode, Sabine [18] [WAYITWAS-2000-18]
Early pioneers often were adventure-seeking men with the ability to adapt to changing situations and seize any opportunity that offered itself. One day rich, the next day poor again - nothing seems to have stopped their intrepid spirits.

Pioneers took the road less traveled / Bowen, Jerry [129] [WAYITWAS-2002-129]
For several years I've had the pleasure of traveling many sections of the old trails that led the pioneers to California.

Mystery surrounded the demise of jail / Bowen, Jerry [70] [WAYITWAS-2001-70]
The next time you're enjoying a day at Andrews Park, go ahead and wander over to the waterfall. It's a little hard to determine the exact position because the banks of Ulatis Creek have changed considerably since 1906, but you are in the area once occupied by Vacaville's original jail.

Benicia-Martinez Bridge makes history / Bowen, Jerry [61] [WAYITWAS-2001-61]
A letter from Ross Noonan brought an error to my attention in the article about the ferryboat Solano, published January 7. At the end of the article I indicated the Carquinez Bridge was responsible for putting the Solano out of business. Well, that was the wrong bridge and wrong year. I should have stuck to the rule of checking my facts from at least two verifiable sources [...]

Pioneer McMahan experienced risky times / Bowen, Jerry [9] [WAYITWAS-2000-9]
Much has been written about the wagon trains and the thousands who fell under the spell of the Gold Rush. But there were those that paved the way, so to speak, for the '49ers. One of the more notable early wagon trains was that of the Bidwell-Bartleson party. It can be said their journey marked the beginning of the settlement of the far West.

Georgia St. Has Pioneers / Wichels, Ernest [790] [WICHELS-1964-790]
When the first block of Georgia Street was razed by the Redevelopment people for the Marina Vista project, the wreckers also removed the landmarks of many early business establishments. From the year 1850 the first block of Georgia has had associated with it the names of dozens of pioneer Vallejo merchants, lawyers, hotel operators, and others. In more recent years it has had some denizons of whom we shall say nothing.

Vallejo's Annie Lizzie Gill was a pioneer activist / Bowen, Jerry [839] [WAYITWAS-2008-839]
As I start this series of columns, I have absolutely no idea on how many installments it will take to finish the story of a remarkable lady that lived in Vallejo, Annie Lizzie Gill who was born in 1863 on a farm outside the town of Oblong, Ill. Her story is a wonderful cavalcade of events and personal anecdotes before arriving in Vallejo in 1918, but since this is a local history column, I'll stick mostly to her life here in Solano County.
