Hoping for gold in them thar - rootops? / Delaplane, Kristin [298] [ECHOS-1996-298]
In the summer of 1857, the citizens of Benicia were apparently considering seeking gold - on their rooftops! The precious metal was escaping from the chimneys at the mint in San Francisco. It was a problem of such consequence that new flues were being constructed in a zigzag pattern so as to prevent the escape of gold dust from the mint.

Third in a series Citizens of Solano County celebrated Independence Day 1856 with balls in Suisun City and at Tufts on Putah Creek, where a large crowd gathered. Between Benicia and Vallejo was A.P. Information for this article came from the Vacaville Museum, the Vacaville Heritage Council and The Reporter archives. Some events in a town's history leave a more memorable mark than was ever suspected at the time. Such is the story of Basic Vegetable Products. The original Vacaville location of Basic's operation was a tin shed on the Uhl ranch, where Shock's Furniture Interiors and Longs Drugs are currently situated on Monte Vista Avenue

Elmira a quiet town but for trains, gunfire / Delaplane, Kristin [345] [ECHOS-1997-345]
In 1883, Elmira was a relatively quiet place except when the trains came through. Therefore, citizens were more than a little alarmed to hear gunfire one day. It turned out that it was the result of the town's constable, McKinney, firing on an escaping prisoner Napa Jim. Whether or not Constable McKinney hit his target is unknown.

In 1857, traffic accidents involved horses / Delaplane, Kristin [299] [ECHOS-1996-299]
Toward the later part of the summer of 1857, the Bray's Minstrels, a celebrated band, performed at the courthouse in Benicia. It was followed by the Excelsior Theatrical Group, which performed two nights running. It was quite a large company, capable of putting on skits and plays with a good number of characters.

If you have ever traversed Empire Street in Fairfield, just one block south of the public library, you could not have escaped seeing the Goosen Mansion in all of it's restored grandeur. Brick walkways, manicured gardens and a high iron fence with electronic security surround this palatial home today.

Fourth of July was celebrated in the various Solano County townships. In Vallejo and Benicia there were processions of military and civic societies followed by fireworks in the evening. In Rio vista there was a boat race with a ball in the evening. In the Suisun Valley, there was a barbecue at Alford's Ranch.

Healing springs, fine hotels and plumbing / Delaplane, Kristin [311] [ECHOS-1996-311]
By October 1858, the Solano County Herald publisher, William J. Hooton, had managed to move his printing equipment by dray from Benicia to his offices in Suisun City located in a new building on the south side of the Plaza. This momentous move was made because of the county seat being situated in Fairfield. The publisher addressed this in the first edition from Suisun dated October 2.
