Suisun City the business hot spot / Delaplane, Kristin [282] [ECHOS-1996-282]
Early businesses were a diversified lot in the mid-1800s. Suisun City was the place to be in Solano County if you were opening a business. Ferrell and Miller's was a general store in Suisun. It carried a line of furnishing goods, fancy and staple dry goods, clothing, boots, shoes, hats, caps, hardware, crockery, glassware and groceries.

Port made Suisun City the county's hub / Delaplane, Kristin [312] [ECHOS-1996-312]
In 1858, with the location of the county seat in Fairfield, building and business in that part of the county took off at break-neck speed. The county valuation for that year was upwards to $4 million dollars at a time when taxes were $1.35 on $100. By mid-October a brick building, built by Capt. Second in a series Springtime 1856: gardening chores were on people's minds. The editors of the Solano County Herald approvingly noted that citizens were taking advantage of the pleasant weather to improve their lots by planting trees and flower and vegetable gardens. Garden Seeds were the hot item at the Benicia Drug Store and Judge and Co. at the Bunker Hill House was set to do business gardening, teaming, well digging and whitewashing.

Suisun City becomes city of enterprise / Delaplane, Kristin [396] [ECHOS-1998-396]
The 1870s were to be a prosperous time for Solano County. Many of those early pioneers were realizing their dreams and had become respected citizens. Suisun City was the major town for enterprise, but several businesses were also established in Vallejo, and Benicia was still a focal point for business.

Suisun City grows roots around it's businesses / Delaplane, Kristin [392] [ECHOS-1998-392]
Suisun City had its roots in the 1850s. Credit for the discovery of the area dates back to 1850, when Curtis Wilson and Dr. John Baker happened to sail up the winding Suisun Slough and they recorded their finding. The environment was mainly tule land populated with mud hens and a herd of elk.

At old hotels, you slept with your boots on / Delaplane, Kristin [275] [ECHOS-1996-275]
Third in a series Suisun City's major hotel was the landmark Roberts House located on the square. It burned down, but it was rebuilt in a most lavish manner. It featured three stories with a balcony and was renamed the Arlington Hotel. In 1868, the site of Elmira was established to accommodate the train, and within a bit of time the Sample Rooming House and Bar was built.
