Benicia Tannery was one of the state's best / Goerke-Shrode, Sabine [863] [WAYITWAS-2008-863]
During the 19th century, canneries and tanneries formed the core of Benicia's economy. The earliest tannery, the Pioneer Tannery, was founded in 1864 and underwent several changes of ownership. Within a short time period others followed, creating a cluster of tanneries.

Leather products played an important role in 19th-century lifestyles. Horses needed harnesses and saddles, furniture was upholstered in leather, people wore riding gear, boots, shoes, gloves - everything required a steady supply of high-quality tanned leather.

In 1868, Benicia's local industry was important to the economy. The Cement Works was turning out about 100 barrels a day and three kilns were kept going day and night. There were two tanneries in town. One of the tanneries employed as many as 14 men.

Vallejo had short-lived stint as state capital / Bowen, Jerry [782] [WAYITWAS-2007-782]
The next time you are in the area bounded by York, Santa Clara, Maine and Sacramento streets in Vallejo, you will be near a long-gone historic site. Back in 1852 a two-story building sporting two flags dominated a hill that was centrally located between those streets.

The oldest town in Solano County is Benicia, which can boast of many firsts: first town founded in the county, first seat of the state Capitol, first U.S. arsenal west of the Mississippi, first Protestant church organized in California, first windmill developed - and on and on.
