In 1886, Henry Goosen opened a blacksmith shop and general hardware store in Cordelia. He had a strong background in well drilling, pumps, steam machinery and related areas. As such, he had become interested in the Fairfield Water Works, located on Empire Street behind the Courthouse. Sea captains weighed their anchors in Solano / Goerke-Shrode, Sabine [680] [WAYITWAS-2006-680]
Sea captains played an important role in the development of the Fairfield and Suisun area. With its proximity to the Suisun Bay, it is no surprise that men like Captain Robert Waterman, Captain Archibald Ritchie and Captain Josiah Wing saw an opportunity to combine business skills with their knowledge of the sea.

Memoirs often provide valuable insight about the past that may seem of little importance when an individual first writes them. Today, with the last remains of the old company town of Cement rapidly disappearing under the onslaught of new development, a way of life is also being relegated to the dusty archives of history to be remembered only in the minds of a few old-timers and people who enjoy learning about the past.

Air base doubles Solano's Population / Goerke-Shrode, Sabine [729] [WAYITWAS-2007-729]
The mid 1940's saw an unprecedented population growth in the Vacaville and Fairfield areas, due to the incoming personel for the new Fairfield-Suisun air base. For several years, both cities struggled to accommodate their new residents. Federal Housing Public Authority projects such as Waterman Park in Fairfield and Vaca Valley Acres in Vacaville were built quickly.
