Historic sites hidden by a veil of the past
/
Bowen, Jerry
[616]
[WAYITWAS-2005-616]
Perhaps in this piece I'll raise an awareness of the rapidly disappearing historic sites that we are losing in Solano County or of those that have already vanished because so little is known about them.

/
Delaplane, Kristin

Memories of the Fairfield area
/
Bowen, Jerry
[198]
[WAYITWAS-2004-198]
Memoirs often provide valuable insight about the past that may seem of little importance when an individual first writes them. Today, with the last remains of the old company town of Cement rapidly disappearing under the onslaught of new development, a way of life is also being relegated to the dusty archives of history to be remembered only in the minds of a few old-timers and people who enjoy learning about the past.

Solano treasure from 1850s: Dingley's flour mill
/
Dingler, Nancy
[466]
[RETROSPECT-2001-466]
Hidden in the depths of the picturesque hills of Green Valley, lies a true historical treasure. During the early pioneer years in Solano County, George Dingley constructed two water-wheel-driven flour mills. A site has been located where the very first water-powered flour mill in Solano County stood.

Historical Sites Marked
/
Wichels, Ernest
[811]
[WICHELS-1964-811]
Our readers, like all Solano and Napa County residents, are inveterate motorists. One can meet drivers of local automobiles on any given day in almost any spot in California. Along with the highway safety signs, directional signs, etc., one does not travel far without seeing this one: "Historical Marker, 500 Feet."

Lonely historic site awaits much-needed help
/
Bowen, Jerry
[830]
[WAYITWAS-2008-830]
It lies on a windswept knoll above the confluence of the San Joaquin River and the Sacramento River. Slowly but surely, giant windmills move stealthily ever closer to the deteriorating wood shell covered adobe. Mold on one of the interior walls appears as a small sinister-looking waterfall from a leak in the roof.

Santa Eulalia find historically significant
/
Bowen, Jerry
[690]
[WAYITWAS-2007-690]
In my last column I diverted a little from the story when the sink was identified as a sacrarium and helped identify the stone portion of the "Canevascini Winery" as possibly the original Santa Eulalia Chapel building and its significance as a historical site.

In 1859 the Annual Methodist Conference in Sacramento decided to raise funds for a Methodist college. The site chosen was in the Yolo County community known today as Zamora. Because of the poor quality of the clay there, the site was abandoned, even though work already had begun on the building.
