Captain Granville Perry Swift was born in Kentucky in 1821. His grandmother was Daniel Boone's younger sister. In about 1840, at age 19, Swift, a rugged individual, set out with a group of trappers headed for California. Once in California he trapped all along Cache Creek and the Sacramento River.

The genuine lover of the human family rejoices greatly when a new avenue is opened for the cultivation of the best ambitions of women. Chief among the many advantages resulting from the discovery of gold in California is that cosmopolitan principle in society which has tended to develop in women, as well as men, the power to lead and direct others in almost all industrial enterprises; especially in the important line of fruit production. In that, women have shown their fitness to a remarkable degree.

Today, a high school education is basic. It is considered the very minimum training to face life's problems and challenges. This past week 540 young men and women were graduated from the Vallejo Senior High School; 348 from Hogan Senior High; a total of 888 for what is undoubtedly a record graduation for our city.

Fruit ranching drew many people to the Vacaville area during the 1880s. While the majority were men, a number of women also became known as successful fruit growers.
