Waterman Park provided answer to wartime housing / Dingler, Nancy [486] [RETROSPECT-2003-486]
Shortly after the beginning of World War II, the Fairfield-Suisun Army Air Field was created. With it came construction workers who were housed in hastily erected "tar paper" barracks. As the war progressed, the mission of the airfield changed from reconnaissance to flying troops and supplies to the "Pacific theater" in our war against the Japanese.

Sea captains weighed their anchors in Solano / Goerke-Shrode, Sabine [680] [WAYITWAS-2006-680]
Sea captains played an important role in the development of the Fairfield and Suisun area. With its proximity to the Suisun Bay, it is no surprise that men like Captain Robert Waterman, Captain Archibald Ritchie and Captain Josiah Wing saw an opportunity to combine business skills with their knowledge of the sea.

A transcontinental road dream fulfilled - Highway 40 / Dingler, Nancy [482] [RETROSPECT-2003-482]
Highway 80 is a transcontinental ribbon of road connecting California to the East Coast. This "transcontinental" highway did not come about easily. Signs have sprung up along roadways in Fairfield, Suisun and Cordelia designating the route of the old Highway 40.

For example, it is obvious that Fairfield High is named after the town, but did you know that Armijo High was named after the family that had the large Spanish land grant it sits on? A short article in the May 10, 1934 Solano Republican stated, "Chief Solano To Be Honored June 3 - In one of California's first gestures to the Indian, the 12-foot tall bronze statue of Chief Solano by William Gordon Huff, made possible by a state appropriation in 1933, will be unveiled at out-of-door ceremonies, where he will grace the top of a beautiful knoll north of the Highway (U.S. 40), four miles west of Fairfield, Sunday, June 3, at 2 p.m."
