Our Choices: Move Forward or Stagnate
/
Rico, John
[883]
[RICO-1981-883]
WAITING FOR THE TKO - Having been a resident of Vacaville for the past 64 years, and a "fixture" on Main Street for 57 years, it has been my privilege to watch the heartbeat of the community throughout the years.

/
Rico, John
[882]
[RICO-1981-882]
SOMETHING TO PONDER OVER - In less than two weeks the 36th anniversary of two of the most controversial days in the history of the world will be observed. Those were the days when president Harry Truman gave his approval for the dropping of an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 1945, and the second on Nagasaki on August 9.

Visualize Vacaville Surrounded By Water?
/
Rico, John
[879]
[RICO-1981-879]
Beware, the flood is coming. At this point I am rather confused about our climatic transitions in the years ahead. One group of scientists and meteorologists tell us the North Pole ice masses are gradually creeping toward us and that in a million years, more or less, little Vacaville will be covered by glaciers measuring hundreds of feet deep.

Greely Said 'Go West' - No Mention of Vaca
/
Rico, John
[877]
[RICO-1981-877]
Go West, Young Man, and Grow Up With the Country - This bit of timely advice is credited to journalist Horace Greeley, but research actually attributes the saying to John Souls about 1851. Greeley used the quote in an article he wrote for the New York Tribune.

Putt, Putt, Putt And The Reporter Was Printed
/
Rico, John
[872]
[RICO-1981-872]
Frequently people ask me if I find it frustrating in my endeavors to offer this column every week, which I have been doing for several decades. Frankly, at times it does bring me to the brink of total blankness in my attempts to go into a subject which can be of interest to local readers.

They Did Their Thing for the Glory of Vacaville
/
Rico, John
[942]
[RICO-1978-942]
PUSH-EM-UP TONY AND HIS BROTHERS - Baseball record books frequently refer to the triple combination of Tinkers to Evers to Chance. While this trio may have been prominent on the national scene, back in the days of "little old Vacaville" there was a combination which could have read: Zupo to Zupo to Zupo to Zupo to Zupo to Zupo to Zupo, and during the same era here you could add Burton to Burton to Burton to Burton to Burton. This may all sound like a broken record but it actually was possible here quite a few years back.

Thank You, Jimmy, for Our 'Flushing' Funds
/
Rico, John
[932]
[RICO-1979-932]
UNCLE HAS A PROBLEM - Uncle Sam, faced with inflationary problems, seems to have been backed into a rather controversial corner. While everyone is screaming about government spending, the race goes on throughout the country for state and federal handouts.

Rain in Our Pipes, and in a Bottle of Bud
/
Rico, John
[929]
[RICO-1979-929]
A SUBJECT CLOSER TO HOME - Now that President Jimmy Carter has solved the Israel- Egypt controversy, at least for the time being, it may be enlightening to put into print a subject which should be of concern to every Vacaville resident. Let's review our rainfall situation.

The Days of No Gasoline Shortage
/
Rico, John
[928]
[RICO-1979-928]
OUR CHANGING TRAVEL HABITS - Now with gasoline in short supply it may be wise to turn back the clock and review some of our traveling habits. Perhaps we have all become "gasaholics," and need to be reminded that the billions of gallons. of gasoline we are now recklessly consuming cannot ever be replaced. It's not like a wheat crop failure in one season which can be rectified by a bumper crop in a following year [...]

A 'Wet' Vacaville During a 'Dry' USA
/
Rico, John
[924]
[RICO-1979-924]
"STUFF" THAT CAME TO PASS - In the early days of the fruit industry in Vacaville, ranchers took advantage of the virgin soil and planted some of their acreages to vineyards. From these vines came luscious sun-ripened, sugar-sweet grapes which found their way to fresh market. But, many of these ranchers preserved their annual ritual of pressing some of these grapes into a quantity of wine.
