Vallejo detained in revolt 150 years ago
/
Delaplane, Kristin
[290]
[ECHOS-1996-290]
By the 1840s, the Mexican hold on California was weakening. There were less than 10,000 Mexicans living in California, and they were not a particularly powerful group, as they were scattered throughout the area in small towns and settlements. Many Californians, including Mexican nationals, were unhappy with Mexico's rule, which was very slack and provided the settlements with little support. Thus, the Union, the United States, was in a good position to win support and take over.

[WAYITWAS-2002-113]
In 1892, an article appearing in the Vallejo Weekly Chronicle gave a rather graphic account of the conditions of Solano's first County Hospital. Built in the mid 1870s, it was then located near where Tabor Park is today in Fairfield. The property occupied by the "poorhouse," as it was commonly called, consisted of 60 acres in that area with wind breaks of eucalyptus trees.

Making a life in Vallejo wasn't easy for the Gills
/
Bowen, Jerry
[862]
[WAYITWAS-2008-862]
When I started this story two weeks ago I made a whopper of a mistake when I said, "Annie wasn't very generous with dates in her book," but it appears she and her husband Howard left Florida by train in the winter of 1918. If I was a politician I guess I could say I "misspoke" but truth is always better.

Bowen, Jerry
[642]
[WAYITWAS-2006-642]
A few months ago as I was driving along the Vallejo waterfront I noticed a rusting ship tied up along the Mare Island waterfront. I pondered what ship it was; what I discovered has led to this article.
