Tuesday, July 4th, marks the 156th anniversary of the birth of the founder of the City of Vallejo. Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo was born in Monterey, California, on July 7, 1808, the eighth child in a family of thirteen children. The parents were Don Ignacio Vicente Ferrer Vallejo and Senora Marie Antonia Lugo Vallejo.

We've reviewed the New Year's Eve celebrations of earlier generations of Vallejoans. A half century and more ago there was one program which was inevitable. This was the formal grand ball attended by all of the officials and leaders in the community, usually followed by a generous meal sometime around midnight.

For upwards of a half-century Vallejo had its own version of San Francisco's Cow Palace. Perhaps the present Vallejo generation marvels at the variety of activities which the Cow Palace holds under its roof--rodeos, ice hockey, presidential conventions, religious revivals, dog shows, prize fights, etc.

VALLEJO'At the close of World War II, the employees and enlisted men and women who were stationed at Mare Island needed an outlet, something to break up the boredom. The Mare Island Recreation Association decided to form a theater group. From these practical beginnings, the theatrical troupe would grow and flourish and contribute in no small measure to the cultural and civic life of the Vallejo area.
