Solano County offers many ways to see past / Delaplane, Kristin [387] [ECHOS-1998-387]
But last week's list told only half the story. History centers can also be found in and around the cities of Rio Vista, Benicia and Vallejo. Like their counterparts in the central and northern Solano County, these centers also rely on volunteers to fulfill their missions.

Celebrations held all over county in 1868 / Delaplane, Kristin [385] [ECHOS-1998-385]
Fourth of July was celebrated in the various Solano County townships. In Vallejo and Benicia there were processions of military and civic societies followed by fireworks in the evening. In Rio vista there was a boat race with a ball in the evening. In the Suisun Valley, there was a barbecue at Alford's Ranch.

Floods and fire made many idle roomers / Delaplane, Kristin [274] [ECHOS-1996-274]
Second in a series In 1857, the town of Rio Vista was founded, with J.M. Sidwell as one of the original settlers. It was in that year that Sidwell built a hotel. The fate of that hotel was to be complete destruction, along with the rest of the area's structures, when the flood of 1862 hit with such force it drowned out the entire town.

Information for this article came from the Vacaville Museum, Vacaville Heritage Council and Solano County Genealogical Society. First of two parts The Montezuma Township consisted of 75 square miles and was bounded by Denverton on the north, Rio Vista on the east, the Sacramento River to the south and Suisun to the west. The towns in the township were Bird's Landing and Collinsville, which were located on the rolling hills known as the Montezuma Hills.

Georgia St. Has Pioneers / Wichels, Ernest [790] [WICHELS-1964-790]
When the first block of Georgia Street was razed by the Redevelopment people for the Marina Vista project, the wreckers also removed the landmarks of many early business establishments. From the year 1850 the first block of Georgia has had associated with it the names of dozens of pioneer Vallejo merchants, lawyers, hotel operators, and others. In more recent years it has had some denizons of whom we shall say nothing.
