[WAYITWAS-2007-738]
My last column looked at the early years of the Fairfield-Suisun Airbase, a wartime response to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Although the local newspapers did not report much about the activities, local residents were eager to learn more about the "great flying field."

/
Goerke-Shrode, Sabine
[89]
[WAYITWAS-2001-89]
I had originally intended this article to be used at the end of November around Pearl Harbor Day. But with events unfolding now, the attack in the USA by terrorists, perhaps a look at six months of news editorial excerpts 50 years ago will give a little insight as to how we got here.

That 'Ugly' Old Metal Building
/
Goerke-Shrode, Sabine
[101]
[WAYITWAS-2001-101]
It wasn't much to look at. The outer walls were of corrugated tin and covered with a less than eye-pleasing red paint. The end facing on 620 East Main Street was overgrown with ivy, effectively hiding the old structure from public scrutiny.

Rico, John

[RICO-1981-902]
AND AWAY WE GROW- Years ago, in fact in 1910, when Vacaville residents traveled to San Francisco using old Highway 40, they needed to be alert in passing through Fairfield else they would have missed the few buildings there marking that hamlet. The population of Fairfield in 1910 was 834, and although Vacaville at that time was no booming metropolis, it claimed a population of 1177. Many Vacaville resident, seeking merchandise and services in those days gone by, would travel to nearby Suisun, which had more to offer than did Vacaville or Fairfield. But, look what's happened since those days.

Law was passed closing saloons on election day to quell rioting
/
Goerke-Shrode, Sabine
[763]
[WAYITWAS-2007-763]
Our recent local elections with low voter turnout and disinterested citizens had me look at earlier elections in Solano County. With today's well-regulated and orderly campaign and voting system in mind, 19th century elections read more like a riot.
