Mira, Mira on the wall--Oh, the tales this theater can tell / Dingler, Nancy [489] [RETROSPECT-2004-489]
VALLEJO'At the close of World War II, the employees and enlisted men and women who were stationed at Mare Island needed an outlet, something to break up the boredom. The Mare Island Recreation Association decided to form a theater group. From these practical beginnings, the theatrical troupe would grow and flourish and contribute in no small measure to the cultural and civic life of the Vallejo area.

Early depot town faded away / Bowen, Jerry [711] [WAYITWAS-2007-711]
My interest in Solano County history began in the 1990s after I retired from Mare Island Naval Shipyard, and it grew by leaps and bounds when I met who I consider one of Vacaville's finest men ever to grace this community, Bert Hughes, at the Vacaville Heritage Council.

Submariner MacArthur / Wichels, Ernest [794] [WICHELS-1964-794]
This past week Vallejo mourned, along with an ever-grateful nation, the passing of a great American --General of the Armies Douglas MacArthur. Significantly, these same days marked the 60th anniversary of another event which is important in the lives of Mare Island and Vallejo.

Vallejo faces decline, gains business footing / Delaplane, Kristin [234] [ECHOS-1995-234]
Information for this article came from The Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum and Vacaville Heritage Council. Second of two parts. Last week we saw the beginnings of Vallejo and how the town first formed, its elation at being chosen as the state capital and subsequent disappointment at being removed as the state capital. How Mare Island became its source of revival and subsequent growth.)

Golden Bear II had a full and varied career / Bowen, Jerry [642] [WAYITWAS-2006-642]
A few months ago as I was driving along the Vallejo waterfront I noticed a rusting ship tied up along the Mare Island waterfront. I pondered what ship it was; what I discovered has led to this article.

County grows and ruffians rile children / Delaplane, Kristin [371] [ECHOS-1998-371]
The county asked for a Suscol and Vallejo road to connect Vallejo with the steam ferry to a point on the Contra Costa shore opposite Mare Island. From there travelers would take a wagon road to Alameda County. This would mean the traveling public would have an accessible and continuous highway from Napa to San Francisco that could be traveled in as short as four hours.

Admiral Farragut: a stellar military career / Dingler, Nancy [468] [RETROSPECT-2001-468]
The name Farragut can certainly ring a bell; he was the oft-quoted person in history class who said, "Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead." But, what connection does this larger-than-life figure from history have to do with Solano County? Admiral Farragut is the founder and was the commandant of the Mare Island Navy Yard.

Skipper's skill beat difficult straits / Bowen, Jerry [189] [WAYITWAS-2003-189]
Quite a few of you responded to my last article on Mare Island and inquired as to whether I had any more stories. Well, of course! But, before I go on, I need to correct an error in the last story. I'd like to thank Philip Gilbert for pointing out my blunder.
