County grows and ruffians rile children
/
Delaplane, Kristin
[371]
[ECHOS-1998-371]
The county asked for a Suscol and Vallejo road to connect Vallejo with the steam ferry to a point on the Contra Costa shore opposite Mare Island. From there travelers would take a wagon road to Alameda County. This would mean the traveling public would have an accessible and continuous highway from Napa to San Francisco that could be traveled in as short as four hours.

In 1863, news from Mare Island included the arrival of the Paul Pray, which had been damaged when it ran up on the rocks at Alcatraz. A no-tice also was issued that four U.S. Marines deserted when they arrived at Mare Island. A $15 reward was offered for their arrest.

[WAYITWAS-2000-49]
Mare Island built 513 ships before construction was stopped after the dockside sinking of the submarine Guitaro, and the ultimate closure of the shipyard. But this story is not about Mare Island, nor the Guitaro.

Bowen, Jerry
[711]
[WAYITWAS-2007-711]
My interest in Solano County history began in the 1990s after I retired from Mare Island Naval Shipyard, and it grew by leaps and bounds when I met who I consider one of Vacaville's finest men ever to grace this community, Bert Hughes, at the Vacaville Heritage Council.

History Repeats
/
Wichels, Ernest
[860]
[WICHELS-1964-860]
Anniversaries do have a habit of repeating themselves. Last Tuesday's Chronicle featured an illustrated story of the demolition of the slip of the Mare Island Ferry Co. at the foot of Georgia Street. Since the days of Farragut (1854) this area has been the departure point of passengers bound for the naval shipyard.

February Anniversaries
/
Wichels, Ernest
[787]
[WICHELS-1964-787]
Every day Is an anniversary of some person, some discovery or other event. These have varying degrees of importance. February reminds us of anniversaries because we celebrate the birthdates of Washington and Lincoln. But we are tempted this week to recall other February anniversaries which should interest many Vallejoans and Mare Island folk.

[ECHOS-1998-391]
In 1869, horse thieves were the bane of society. Early in the year a couple of mares were stolen from Lagoon Valley and then the most valuable two horses of 18 were taken from Mosley's Ranch near Vallejo.

Admiral Farragut: a stellar military career
/
Dingler, Nancy
[468]
[RETROSPECT-2001-468]
The name Farragut can certainly ring a bell; he was the oft-quoted person in history class who said, "Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead." But, what connection does this larger-than-life figure from history have to do with Solano County? Admiral Farragut is the founder and was the commandant of the Mare Island Navy Yard.

/
Bowen, Jerry
[189]
[WAYITWAS-2003-189]
Quite a few of you responded to my last article on Mare Island and inquired as to whether I had any more stories. Well, of course! But, before I go on, I need to correct an error in the last story. I'd like to thank Philip Gilbert for pointing out my blunder.
