Early Solano

Wichels, Ernest
[784]
[WICHELS-1964-784]
A common human weakness is to predict the future. Sometimes the vision we see in the crystal ball may, by coincidence, come true. The editor of the Vallejo Recorder, in July and August of 1867, published a series of articles on Solano County communities and speculated on their development.

[WICHELS-1964-781]
Like Santa Claus, the editor of an historical column has many helpers. Hardly a day passes that I do not receive some information which helps to bridge the gap between the past and the present.

Christmas In Vallejo
/
Wichels, Ernest
[777]
[WICHELS-1963-777]
Christmas is the same over the years--the family reunions, the joy of the children, and the turkey on the table--but the manner of reporting it has changed. We went back into the old copies of the Vallejo Chronicle 70 to 90 years ago, and bring you the life of the city in those holidays.

Pena Adobe has a colorful history
/
Delaplane, Kristin
[395]
[ECHOS-1998-395]
The Pena Adobe, a registered historical landmark, was the original home of Juan Felipe Pena, one of the first European settlers in the area in the 1840s. Today the city of Vacaville along with the Vacaville Heritage Council is working on making repairs and upgrading the environment so that the artifacts that relate to the adobe's heritage may be safely housed there. Volunteers are wanted for this project. The goal is to bring the adobe up to the standards of a quality museum-like structure and then maintain regular hours with volunteer docents.

Delaplane, Kristin
[304]
[ECHOS-1996-304]
The winter of 1858, the citizens of Benicia had a full view of a snow-covered Mount Diablo. By February, the rains had begun. In January, two men, apparently from Napa, were out hunting about two miles from Benicia. One man raised his gun to fire at a duck on the wing [...]

[WAYITWAS-2001-81]
Judging by the amount of e-mail I received in the last few weeks, there apparently is quite a bit of interest in the Cordelia area history.

Vacaville's Shaky Beginning
/
Bowen, Jerry
[15]
[WAYITWAS-2000-15]
For all you history buffs in the area it is a well-known fact that on Aug. 21, 1850, Juan Manuel Vaca sold nine square miles of land for $3,000 to William McDaniel, with the provision that one square mile be designated as the new town of Vacaville. In addition, McDaniel was to deed back to Vaca 1,055 lots in the new town. Right?
