Memorial Days In Vallejo
/
Wichels, Ernest
[802]
[WICHELS-1964-802]
Decoration Day was made a fixed celebration on May 5, 1868, when Commander-in-Chief John A. Logan, of the Grand Army of the Republic, issued a general order designating May 30, 1868, "for the purpose of strewing with flowers the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country." Some 15 years later the G.A.R. asked that the name of this annual observance be changed to "Memorial Day," but here in 1964-about 80 years later-we still find many old timers calling it "Decoration Day."

People Who Build Ships
/
Wichels, Ernest
[800]
[WICHELS-1964-800]
Mare Island is again on the threshold of decision. Sometime this year, we are told, the administration will determine a cutback in the number of naval shipyards. Eleven yards are too many, it is stated, for the present size of United States naval forces afloat. Many considerations will enter into such a decision [...]

Wichels, Ernest
[792]
[WICHELS-1964-792]
Tomorrow is the anniversary of Mare Island's most disastrous earthquake. Shortly before midnight on March 30, 1898 the tremor struck. Although damage was experienced in both Vallejo and in San Francisco, Mare Island suffered most.

February Anniversaries
/
Wichels, Ernest
[787]
[WICHELS-1964-787]
Every day Is an anniversary of some person, some discovery or other event. These have varying degrees of importance. February reminds us of anniversaries because we celebrate the birthdates of Washington and Lincoln. But we are tempted this week to recall other February anniversaries which should interest many Vallejoans and Mare Island folk.

Problems Not New
/
Wichels, Ernest
[783]
[WICHELS-1964-783]
Too frequently we read of some "new" development to improve the economy; or hear someone wonder what has happened to modern youth; or see a reference to the shipyard "crisis." In reviewing the pages of one hundred years of Vallejo newspapers we come to the inevitable conclusion there is really nothing new.

[WICHELS-1965-836]
The year 1965 brings to an end the five-year observance of the Civil War Centennial. And this brings to mind a few local reminders of that conflict, and several other noted historical facts not readily appreciated by most Solano citizens.

Solano's 49ers
/
Wichels, Ernest
[840]
[WICHELS-1965-840]
It isn't easy to find a real "native son" these days. In fact, "native sons" are California's minority group in this day of expanding population - with 20,000 new residents crossing our state boundaries every month. Yet, it is surprising how many of our Vallejo and Solano County residents are direct descendants of the hardy pioneers who came to California - by overland trial or via the Isthmus of Panama, in 1849 or earlier.

New Year Eve Past Century
/
Wichels, Ernest
[847]
[WICHELS-1964-847]
We discover what our forefathers did during the New Year season by reading Farragut's log books, and looking over the early editions of the Vallejo Chronicle. How did the weather behave here 100 years ago today?

Carols And A Blaze
/
Wichels, Ernest
[846]
[WICHELS-1964-846]
In the days before automobiles, movies, TV or radio, many Vallejoans turned to their churches for Christmas Eve fellowship and entertainment. We chose 1878, at random, and here is what the weekly Chronicle of 86 years ago said, on Dec. 28:
