Dixon's 1897 began with a ball

One hundred years ago, Dixon's New Year's Ball was deemed a success. Over 100 couples danced the night away to Newby's Orchestra and enjoyed a supper that was deemed magnificent in quality and quantity. A few couples did not want to depart even at 6 in the morning, but the worn out musicians laid down their instruments.

Though he was born in Orange County, Va., on May 30, 1808, he grew up in Kentucky. Like many young frontier men, he felt the urge to move further west. The year 1830 found him as a farmer in New London, Miss., where he married Cornelia Catherine Lamme, a great-granddaughter of Daniel Boone, on Jan. 19, 1830.

Aditty was frequently recited here by youngsters in our Yesteryear when the many male Chinese who resided here sported a hairdo known as a queue (pigtail). And, too, that's when long hair was an oddity on any young boy or man.

In January 1858, Mart Taylor's Comedians, a troupe that was touring the state, performed at Benicia's Court House. The bill of fare was "Betsy Baker" and "Pleasant Neighbors." In between, Ms. Arabella danced the highland fling in a "most fascinating manner," Mart Taylor sang his favorite songs and Mr. Thompson danced the Wooden Shoe.
