Among the collections at the Vacaville Heritage Council and the Solano County Genealogy Society at the Old Town Hall on East Main Street are yearbooks from Solano County Schools dating back as far as the late 1890s. These publications are a treasure that help historians gain some insight into past attitudes, styles of dress, and pride in school and community and to perhaps learn something valuable from the "good old days."

Over the last 150 years, towns and small communities have come and gone. Some only existed on paper and never got off the ground. There were many reasons for the rise and fall of these communities, including war, railroad and highway placement and changing industry, among others.

During the late 1880s and early 1890s, Vacaville residents eagerly tried to promote the town and their flourishing orchard industry throughout the United States in an effort to attract new settlers to move here.

In my last article, we began following the long wagon trip to California in 1849 with James S. Pleasants and his family. They had named the wagon train the Pleasant Hill Wagon Train in honor of the town they had been living near in Missouri.

Original map drawn up between Manuel Vaca, William McDaniel and L.B. Mizner for the land deal that created the town of Vacaville. This map shows traces of a land swindle that had Vaca selling off more land to McDaniel and Mizner than he thought he was selling. When Vaca realized he had been tricked, he filed suit. Vaca thought he was only selling one square mile to the two men, but ended up selling nine square miles. Vaca sued and lost the first round in court, but won the second..

In 1873, Suisun City was enjoying its place as the hub of activity in the county. In that town, it was tradition to welcome in the New Year and ring out the old by ringing both the church and fire bells.
