Georgia St. Has Pioneers
/
Wichels, Ernest
[790]
[WICHELS-1964-790]
When the first block of Georgia Street was razed by the Redevelopment people for the Marina Vista project, the wreckers also removed the landmarks of many early business establishments. From the year 1850 the first block of Georgia has had associated with it the names of dozens of pioneer Vallejo merchants, lawyers, hotel operators, and others. In more recent years it has had some denizons of whom we shall say nothing.

Celebrations held all over county in 1868
/
Delaplane, Kristin
[385]
[ECHOS-1998-385]
Fourth of July was celebrated in the various Solano County townships. In Vallejo and Benicia there were processions of military and civic societies followed by fireworks in the evening. In Rio vista there was a boat race with a ball in the evening. In the Suisun Valley, there was a barbecue at Alford's Ranch.

Sunday Law sets aside time for church
/
Delaplane, Kristin
[307]
[ECHOS-1996-307]
In the spring of 1858, a new stage line was being established to run between Marysville and Vallejo or Benicia by way of Smith's Ferry, Cacheville, McMahon Ranch and Vacaville. This route was nearly identical to that of the proposed railroad. That it was to operate within nine miles of Napa City meant it would be not only accommodate passengers to and from upper Solano County, but also Napa Springs.

Suisun's early years ripe with growth, drama
/
Bowen, Jerry
[822]
[WAYITWAS-2008-822]
In my last column, Suisun was incorporated and officers were elected in 1868. By 1879, nearly 10 years had elapsed before the railroad traversed the tule marsh on the direct route to Benicia. Ballast hauled onto the soft peat ground sank from sight time after time, although hundreds of trainloads were deposited. The sink would appear to be filled and work on the track started again, when suddenly the surface would give way, and the tracks would disappear.

Hoodlums, Then, Now
/
Wichels, Ernest
[844]
[WICHELS-1964-844]
Vallejo is being plagued with a rash of broken windows, damaged automobiles, purse-snatchings, and other acts of hoodlumism. A common observation is: "What is happening to our society?" or "How did this all start?" Apparently many people believe this is all new.

Memorial Days In Vallejo
/
Wichels, Ernest
[802]
[WICHELS-1964-802]
Decoration Day was made a fixed celebration on May 5, 1868, when Commander-in-Chief John A. Logan, of the Grand Army of the Republic, issued a general order designating May 30, 1868, "for the purpose of strewing with flowers the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country." Some 15 years later the G.A.R. asked that the name of this annual observance be changed to "Memorial Day," but here in 1964-about 80 years later-we still find many old timers calling it "Decoration Day."

Carter Heights
/
Wichels, Ernest
[798]
[WICHELS-1964-798]
Carter Heights was the earlier name for the present Vallejo Heights. Likewise, how many of our readers remember Fremont Street? Many of Vallejo's prominent residents, half a century or so ago, lived on Fremont.

Fruit-growers, robbers savor trains' arrival
/
Delaplane, Kristin
[268]
[ECHOS-1996-268]
Information for this article came from the Western Railway Museum and the Vacaville Heritage Council. Second in a series In 1869, the Vallejo Street Car Co. began operation as a horse-car line going from the business district to the train depot in north Vallejo. It proved to be a poor business venture, as the car had difficulty staying on the tracks.
