/
Delaplane, Kristin
[345]
[ECHOS-1997-345]
In 1883, Elmira was a relatively quiet place except when the trains came through. Therefore, citizens were more than a little alarmed to hear gunfire one day. It turned out that it was the result of the town's constable, McKinney, firing on an escaping prisoner Napa Jim. Whether or not Constable McKinney hit his target is unknown.

[RICO-1981-902]
AND AWAY WE GROW- Years ago, in fact in 1910, when Vacaville residents traveled to San Francisco using old Highway 40, they needed to be alert in passing through Fairfield else they would have missed the few buildings there marking that hamlet. The population of Fairfield in 1910 was 834, and although Vacaville at that time was no booming metropolis, it claimed a population of 1177. Many Vacaville resident, seeking merchandise and services in those days gone by, would travel to nearby Suisun, which had more to offer than did Vacaville or Fairfield. But, look what's happened since those days.

Bowen, Jerry

[WAYITWAS-2007-711]
My interest in Solano County history began in the 1990s after I retired from Mare Island Naval Shipyard, and it grew by leaps and bounds when I met who I consider one of Vacaville's finest men ever to grace this community, Bert Hughes, at the Vacaville Heritage Council.

[351]
[ECHOS-1997-351]
It was likely in the 1870s that a sailing vessel passenger Edward A. Young arrived in the Eureka after sailing around the Horn from New Brunswick. By then, lumbering had replaced gold mining as the major income source in this coastal town and Young went to work in the lumbering business. Not too much time passed when he was met with an accident [...]
