High Winds, Fire, Dry Grass: Black Thursday
/
Rico, John
[914]
[RICO-1979-914]
A DAY TO REMEMBER - The sun was shining brightly over Vacaville on that September 16th back in 1965, but it was barely visible. It was being blotted out by dense clouds of smoke. The Black Thursday fire was on a rampage, and men and machines were helpless to stop the fiery tongue as it worked its way south toward Vacaville.

Memorial Days In Vallejo
/
Wichels, Ernest
[802]
[WICHELS-1964-802]
Decoration Day was made a fixed celebration on May 5, 1868, when Commander-in-Chief John A. Logan, of the Grand Army of the Republic, issued a general order designating May 30, 1868, "for the purpose of strewing with flowers the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country." Some 15 years later the G.A.R. asked that the name of this annual observance be changed to "Memorial Day," but here in 1964-about 80 years later-we still find many old timers calling it "Decoration Day."

Roads and streets: a perpetual pain
/
Bowen, Jerry
[161]
[WAYITWAS-2003-161]
As I was maneuvering my way past various road repair and construction sites to the Vacaville Heritage Council the other day I was trying to think of a subject for this week's column and there it was. It seems that among the subjects that we constantly complain about - the weather, growth, the environment and open space - the roads and highways rank high as a subject of debate, discussion and just plain complaining.

Mystery surrounded the demise of jail
/
Bowen, Jerry
[70]
[WAYITWAS-2001-70]
The next time you're enjoying a day at Andrews Park, go ahead and wander over to the waterfall. It's a little hard to determine the exact position because the banks of Ulatis Creek have changed considerably since 1906, but you are in the area once occupied by Vacaville's original jail.
