Exposition was to showcase county
/
Goerke-Shrode, Sabine
[590]
[WAYITWAS-2005-590]
As many of my readers have guessed by now, I am intrigued by the number of great community events, celebrating a specific moment in local history or just life in general and usually involving the whole county, that have taken place over the last 150 years of Solano County's existence. Headlines of the various local newspapers always spout tantalizing words such as "thousands of visitors," "pageants," "gigantic" and "spectacular," and recount the enormous efforts to create these elaborate festivals.

Newspapers offered mish-mash of news briefs
/
Bowen, Jerry
[587]
[WAYITWAS-2005-587]
I've always found it interesting to read the tattered newspapers of old and compare the items printed then to today's news.

Harbison House saw the Nut Tree flourish
/
Bowen, Jerry
[210]
[WAYITWAS-2004-210]
I drive by the now-empty parcel that once held Vacaville's famous Nut Tree several times a week, and when I see the Harbison House I can't help but wonder what the Allisons and the Harbisons would have to say about what they would see today.

Ranch Towns In Two Areas
/
Wichels, Ernest
[854]
[WICHELS-1964-854]
Most people think of Vallejo strictly a shipyard city. Many find it difficult to believe that once it qualified as a "ranch town." Ranchowners, the hundreds of employes in dairy operations, cattle and sheep raising, and grain and hay harvests, formed a vital segment of Vallejo's economy in early days.

Buildings That Are Old, New
/
Wichels, Ernest
[807]
[WICHELS-1964-807]
Several days ago the Casa de Vallejo was heavily damaged by fire. The blaze was confined to the wooden, or eastern portion of the structure. The younger generation is undoubtedly of the opinion that this has always been a hotel-but less than 50 years ago it served an entirely different purpose.

Early Vallejo Race Tracks
/
Wichels, Ernest
[806]
[WICHELS-1964-806]
The Solano County Fair is here and the horses are running! This is a young Fair but many Solano and Napa residents may have the impression that racing is "new" to these counties. Have you ever heard of Vallejo's Hollywood Track, or Vallejo's Cyclodrome, or Napa's Race Track?

Early Hospitals In The County
/
Wichels, Ernest
[788]
[WICHELS-1964-788]
Vallejo did not have a hospital until 1907! What did Vallejoans do for surgical and medical service, and for nursing care, during the early part of the past century?

Early Solano
/
Wichels, Ernest
[784]
[WICHELS-1964-784]
A common human weakness is to predict the future. Sometimes the vision we see in the crystal ball may, by coincidence, come true. The editor of the Vallejo Recorder, in July and August of 1867, published a series of articles on Solano County communities and speculated on their development.

The first issue of the first newspaper out of Vacaville was dated March 15, 1883. The subscription price was $2 a year and the publisher was James D. McClain: "The Reporter will deal with the present and future. [...]

Travelers bugged by strange bedfellows Lodgings harbored pesky critters and sleepless nights
/
Bowen, Jerry
[660]
[WAYITWAS-2006-660]
I was watching the news today regarding the infestation of bedbugs and about fleas carrying West Nile virus. The media went on and on about people traveling all over the world and the result is that diseases and bugs of all kinds are being spread over areas once free from such things.
