[WICHELS-1964-848]
This afternoon, at 3 o'clock, the public is invited to the Third Annual Pioneers Day sponsored by the Solano County Historical Society, at the historic Rockville Churchyard, about a mile north of Cordelia. The society has a long-range program of cataloging the large list of pioneers who shaped the destinies of our, county a century ago.

One of' the Gibson Publications-the Evening Chronicle, is nearing Its 97th birthday. It was established as a weekly in the summer of 1867, just in time to give a running account of the progress of railroad construction proceeding from South Vallejo toward Marysville.

Great Depression caused hard times in Solano
/
Bowen, Jerry
[825]
[WAYITWAS-2008-825]
Today I saw an interesting front page from a United Kingdom newspaper, The Independent, showing a photo that may or may not be a modern soup line waiting for handouts. The headline blatantly shouts, "United States of America 2008; The Great Depression."

Helping to preserve Solano County's yore
/
Bowen, Jerry
[496]
[WAYITWAS-2004-496]
How the past is used or abused can have an important bearing on how a community or county perceives itself. Preservation and promotion of a county's collective past is a logical goal for any self-respecting people. Indeed, pride in the past is seeing resurgence lately as more and more of our precious history is bulldozed under for redevelopment. It takes dedicated people who aren't afraid to work hard in order to set aside some of our precious history in Solano County for future generations.

Wichels, Ernest
[847]
[WICHELS-1964-847]
We discover what our forefathers did during the New Year season by reading Farragut's log books, and looking over the early editions of the Vallejo Chronicle. How did the weather behave here 100 years ago today?

Early Solano
/
Wichels, Ernest
[784]
[WICHELS-1964-784]
A common human weakness is to predict the future. Sometimes the vision we see in the crystal ball may, by coincidence, come true. The editor of the Vallejo Recorder, in July and August of 1867, published a series of articles on Solano County communities and speculated on their development.

Historical Landmarks
/
Wichels, Ernest
[780]
[WICHELS-1964-780]
Credit is due those whose efforts are devoted to the preservation of Historical Landmarks in Solano County. There are many groups and many individuals interested in this work and an excellent job has been done so far. But so much remains to be done. One of the completed projects was marked, last May 30th, with the dedication of a California Historical Landmark at the century-old Rockville Church, just north of Cordelia on old U.S [...]

Remembering some Christmas pasts
/
Goerke-Shrode, Sabine
[50]
[WAYITWAS-2000-50]
Christmas is fast approaching with its wonderful traditions and not so wonderful "still-have-to-do" moments. Records of earlier celebrations allow us a glimpse of some of the same traditions but also of a slower, seemingly more peaceful season.
