Solano County communities busy in 1884
/
Delaplane, Kristin
[362]
[ECHOS-1997-362]
The popular saloon owned by A.B. Miller, at the corner of Bush and Depot streets in Vacaville, was the scene of a major shooting in December 1884. Louis Sohn was killed - most felt deservedly so. Sohn was greatly angered when Nap Broughton's widow married J. Walter A. Gilmore, because Sohn had been determined to run her ranch himself.

[312]
[ECHOS-1996-312]
In 1858, with the location of the county seat in Fairfield, building and business in that part of the county took off at break-neck speed. The county valuation for that year was upwards to $4 million dollars at a time when taxes were $1.35 on $100. By mid-October a brick building, built by Capt. Waterman for the county clerk and treasurer, was completed by local builder A.P [...]

Cost of business in 1857 Benicia lowered
/
Delaplane, Kristin
[294]
[ECHOS-1996-294]
Just before New Year's 1857, there was a snowstorm in Benicia that lasted four to five hours and left 2 inches of snow on the ground. To citizens' knowledge, it was the first snowfall since the city was founded. Hatch, Brackett and Co., proprietors of the Brick Store at 1st and E, celebrated New Year's Eve with an old-fashioned housewarming to thank customers for their patronage. Business was apparently so brisk the owners had just completed an extensive addition to the store [...]

Early businesses were a diversified lot in the mid-1800s. Suisun City was the place to be in Solano County if you were opening a business. Ferrell and Miller's was a general store in Suisun. It carried a line of furnishing goods, fancy and staple dry goods, clothing, boots, shoes, hats, caps, hardware, crockery, glassware and groceries.

[WAYITWAS-2007-701]
In August 1956, the headline declared "Hickory Will Be Phone Prefix Here." The area was growing, and numbers like "6806" for the California Market in Vacaville couldn't possibly be used as the population exploded.

[723]
[WAYITWAS-2007-723]
Local cities today struggle to accommodate population increases. Vacaville, Fairfield and Suisun faced similar challenges in the later years of World War II, when construction of the new Fairfield-Suisun Army Air Field brought hundreds of new residents.

[WAYITWAS-2005-564]
In 1886, Henry Goosen opened a blacksmith shop and general hardware store in Cordelia. He had a strong background in well drilling, pumps, steam machinery and related areas. As such, he had become interested in the Fairfield Water Works, located on Empire Street behind the Courthouse. He was in the process of overhauling the aging machinery, when a devastating fire destroyed the plant on Christmas Eve 1901 [...]

[WAYITWAS-2004-557]
In my last column we saw the beginnings of the new town of Winters and its naming. The Dixon Tribune began reporting the development of Winters as "a flourishing town; on paper ... " and that several merchants in Vacaville and Dixon would be relocating or opening businesses in the town.

Memories of the Fairfield area
/
Bowen, Jerry
[198]
[WAYITWAS-2004-198]
Memoirs often provide valuable insight about the past that may seem of little importance when an individual first writes them. Today, with the last remains of the old company town of Cement rapidly disappearing under the onslaught of new development, a way of life is also being relegated to the dusty archives of history to be remembered only in the minds of a few old-timers and people who enjoy learning about the past.
