Snapshots of an era
/
Bowen, Jerry
[733]
[WAYITWAS-2007-733]
Among the collections at the Vacaville Heritage Council and the Solano County Genealogy Society at the Old Town Hall on East Main Street are yearbooks from Solano County Schools dating back as far as the late 1890s. These publications are a treasure that help historians gain some insight into past attitudes, styles of dress, and pride in school and community and to perhaps learn something valuable from the "good old days."

Birds Landing tavern shot full of memories
/
Bowen, Jerry
[584]
[WAYITWAS-2005-584]
I just have to tell you about a great trip into the past last weekend. Ted Haskins, Jesse Hayden and I headed to Birds Landing last weekend to continue our ongoing, self-appointed quest to videotape as much of Solano County's history as we can. We were to meet one of this column's readers, Evelina Lawrence, who had been a resident of the town back in the 1950s. She lives in Oakland now, but she had many fond memories of the town she lived in as a child and a photo album from which we were to re-photograph pictures [...]

/
Bowen, Jerry
[582]
[WAYITWAS-2005-582]
One of the folks who recently moved to Vacaville dropped into the Vacaville Heritage Council in the Old Town Hall the other day and asked if we were a museum of some sort.

Bridgeport began with high hopes
/
Bowen, Jerry
[80]
[WAYITWAS-2001-80]
In my last article we explored the beginnings and demise of the original town of Cordelia. With the impending arrival of the California Pacific Railroad, residents realized the location of the town would no longer be on the route of normal travel. (In my last article on Cordelia I called it the Central Pacific, which was incorrect).

Vacaville in Ashes
/
Bowen, Jerry
[35]
[WAYITWAS-2000-35]
June 6, 1877. The north wind was hot and harsh on the dry landscape surrounding the small town of Vacaville. At the southwest end of town, Tom Wilson had just returned from Suisun, put his horse in the barn and gone into the house. It was quiet in their home because his mother, Luzena, and sister were visiting Yosemite [...]

Winters easily could have had another name
/
Bowen, Jerry
[554]
[WAYITWAS-2004-554]
In my last column we visited some early history centering around the Winters area and what were the beginnings of a bustling town named Buckeye northeast of today's Winters.

Delving into Winters story with Vacaville
/
Bowen, Jerry
[551]
[WAYITWAS-2004-551]
The town of Winters, located just across the Yolo County line, shares its history with Vacaville in many ways. The earliest inhabitants of the area were Indians known as the Wintun, also known as Southern Patwin or Southern Wintun. They moved into the southern Sacramento Valley from the north some 1,200 years ago.

Where is the 'real' Vacaville?
/
Bowen, Jerry
[19]
[WAYITWAS-2000-19]
In my last column, I stated that it was unknown which blocks of lots in the town of Vacaville were allotted to Vaca and Pena. Well, dagnabbit, that's not quite true. It's just that nobody seems to have written about it that I know of.

Memories of the Fairfield area
/
Bowen, Jerry
[198]
[WAYITWAS-2004-198]
Memoirs often provide valuable insight about the past that may seem of little importance when an individual first writes them. Today, with the last remains of the old company town of Cement rapidly disappearing under the onslaught of new development, a way of life is also being relegated to the dusty archives of history to be remembered only in the minds of a few old-timers and people who enjoy learning about the past.

Chipping away at island's name
/
Bowen, Jerry
[185]
[WAYITWAS-2003-185]
Have you ever wondered how a certain location on a map came to be named? Maybe not. But more often than not, a fascinating story unravels when researching the origin of the name of an island, town, road, or canyon. Such was the case of a little-known island at the southern extreme of Solano County.
