Time Has Erased a Beautiful Vacaville Scene
/
Rico, John
[881]
[RICO-1981-881]
WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO MY TOWN? - People who have resided here 50 years or more (there are only a few remaining), can look back and make a comparison of Vacaville "back when" and Vacaville today.

Old Time News Writing
/
Wichels, Ernest
[775]
[WICHELS-1963-775]
Like women's fashions, automobile bodies and hair-dos, the style of reporting news also changes with the years. In our research the past few weeks, poring over the century-old editions of our Vallejo newspapers, we have gleaned some amusing stories. The most interesting aspect is that the city editor, in the olden days, always editorialized in his reporting. Today no city desk would dare to do so.

Dingler, Nancy
[556]
[RETROSPECT-2004-556]
It is fun to look back at copies of the old newspapers and magazines to find out how society and culture has changed since the beginning of the last century.

Goerke-Shrode, Sabine
[734]
[WAYITWAS-2007-734]
My recent columns on the wartime housing boom in response to the incoming personnel for the Fairfield-Suisun Army Air Field led me to look a bit closer at the early years of Travis Air Force Base.

Carols And A Blaze
/
Wichels, Ernest
[846]
[WICHELS-1964-846]
In the days before automobiles, movies, TV or radio, many Vallejoans turned to their churches for Christmas Eve fellowship and entertainment. We chose 1878, at random, and here is what the weekly Chronicle of 86 years ago said, on Dec. 28:

Graduates Of Early Vallejo
/
Wichels, Ernest
[805]
[WICHELS-1964-805]
Today, a high school education is basic. It is considered the very minimum training to face life's problems and challenges. This past week 540 young men and women were graduated from the Vallejo Senior High School; 348 from Hogan Senior High; a total of 888 for what is undoubtedly a record graduation for our city.

Problems Not New
/
Wichels, Ernest
[783]
[WICHELS-1964-783]
Too frequently we read of some "new" development to improve the economy; or hear someone wonder what has happened to modern youth; or see a reference to the shipyard "crisis." In reviewing the pages of one hundred years of Vallejo newspapers we come to the inevitable conclusion there is really nothing new.

Orders For Mare Island
/
Wichels, Ernest
[772]
[WICHELS-1963-772]
We oldsters often date ourselves by the fashions we wear, by the tunes we hum, or by the furniture we insist on keeping. Today we are going to date the Mare Island Naval Shipyard. Most everyone knows that our great naval plant is 109 years old but it is interesting to read the thousands of Commandants' Orders and Notices which serve as milestones of the past century.

Civil War-era Solano full of commotion
/
Delaplane, Kristin
[346]
[ECHOS-1997-346]
The New Year's news was about the "great Christmas fight" in Silveyville. A Suisun man, a "pure Union man," was visiting those parts when a drunk "Secesh Smith", also know as "Curly Headed Smith", started looking for a fight.
