Drivers of today, 1926 much the same
/
Bowen, Jerry
[119]
[WAYITWAS-2002-119]
Transportation seems to occupy a lot of space in newsprint today. High insurance rates, drunk driving, overcrowded highways and the huge number of cars on the road all seem to be a big problem.

NOT TOO LONG AGO - JUST 100 YEARS - Back in 1879, Wood, Alley and Co. of Oakland published what is perhaps the most comprehensive history of Solano County ever assembled up to that era. Historian J. P [...]

Local ventures change hands as 1871 begins
/
Delaplane, Kristin
[400]
[ECHOS-1998-400]
A storm in February 1871 covered the hills with snow for a day. The flagstaff in front of Wilson's stable in Suisun City, which had been standing for more than a dozen years, was knocked down in a severe gust during the storm.

Solano has seen many changes
/
Dingler, Nancy
[492]
[RETROSPECT-2004-492]
The 1850s brought a major change to Suisun and the surrounding area that would alter the landscape forever. Ship captain, Josiah Wing purchased the "island" of Suisun from Curtis Wilson and Dr. John Baker in 1852, built a wharf and a warehouse, then had his house in San Francisco shipped up the slough and his family sent for. In partnership with John Owens, Captain Wing laid out the town of Suisun. They soon discovered that at low tide, Suisun was not an island, but connected to Fairfield by a strip of land, eventually named Union Ave.

Mystery surrounded the demise of jail
/
Bowen, Jerry
[70]
[WAYITWAS-2001-70]
The next time you're enjoying a day at Andrews Park, go ahead and wander over to the waterfall. It's a little hard to determine the exact position because the banks of Ulatis Creek have changed considerably since 1906, but you are in the area once occupied by Vacaville's original jail.

History Repeats
/
Wichels, Ernest
[860]
[WICHELS-1964-860]
Anniversaries do have a habit of repeating themselves. Last Tuesday's Chronicle featured an illustrated story of the demolition of the slip of the Mare Island Ferry Co. at the foot of Georgia Street. Since the days of Farragut (1854) this area has been the departure point of passengers bound for the naval shipyard.

Memorial Days In Vallejo
/
Wichels, Ernest
[802]
[WICHELS-1964-802]
Decoration Day was made a fixed celebration on May 5, 1868, when Commander-in-Chief John A. Logan, of the Grand Army of the Republic, issued a general order designating May 30, 1868, "for the purpose of strewing with flowers the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country." Some 15 years later the G.A.R. asked that the name of this annual observance be changed to "Memorial Day," but here in 1964-about 80 years later-we still find many old timers calling it "Decoration Day."
