Unearthing fact and fiction in life of poet
/
Bowen, Jerry
[549]
[WAYITWAS-2004-549]
In my last column we saw that Markham had run away and was gone for about six months and had finally realized his dream to attend Vacaville's California College. During my continuing research about Markham, I found the following in notes supplied to the Vacaville Heritage Council by J. W. It must have made a favorable impression on him, because he applied for and received a land grant in 1839 from Mariano Vallejo. It consisted of about 13,000 acres of Suisun Valley, extending from Suisun Marsh to Manka's Corners and in March 1840, Gov. Alverado granted final approval.

May day tragedy haunted Mare Island
/
Bowen, Jerry
[65]
[WAYITWAS-2001-65]
Sometimes events in a person's life are so indelibly imprinted on their mind that they can remember the tiniest of details for the rest of their life. So it was on the morning of May 16, 1969, as I drove from Napa to work at Mare Island. After working in the inside Weapons Electronics Shop 36 for two years, I was finally transferred to the waterfront to work on the submarine, Guitarro, SSN-665. That is where I wanted to be [...]

/
Bowen, Jerry
[5]
[WAYITWAS-2000-5]
Monuments have been built to them and writers have both praised and denounced their actions. They have been variously described as rebels, heroes, traitors and patriots. Some historians and writers might be said to be biased depending on your point of view, and so it is even today.
