At the time this interview took place Mr. Lowe was recovering from a stroke and was taking some Chinese herbal medicines to help him recover. Today he is in good health.

Hotels flourished during Gold Rush period

One of the county's first hotels was owned by Capt. Edward von Pfister, who had purchased a whole line of goods for a general store in Hawaii. In 1846, he moved to Benicia and set up a general store in a 40-by-25-foot adobe. His store became a gathering place by day and bar/hotel at night, the store's floor providing the sleeping quarters.

In my last column we saw that Markham had run away and was gone for about six months and had finally realized his dream to attend Vacaville's California College. During my continuing research about Markham, I found the following in notes supplied to the Vacaville Heritage Council by J. W. Hawkins: The reference isn't noted, but I suspect it came from "The Unknown Edwin Markham" by Lois Filler.

In the first installment of the history of the Suisun Wednesday Club we saw it evolve from a meeting of 16 civic-minded ladies who in 1911 wanted to do something positive for their community to the building in 1926 of a permanent clubhouse on Sacramento Street and Washington Avenue.

YESTERDAY'S "JUNK" - There are many resident of Vacaville who can reminisce back to the days when their possessions included a pot-bellied stove, a washboard, coffee grinder and a myriad collection of items which had served them well, but as newer innovations made an appearance, those old pieces of "junk" ended up at the city dumps.
