Solano's past heavily influenced by water, its uses
/
Goerke-Shrode, Sabine
[10]
[WAYITWAS-2000-10]
Nearly half of Solano County is bordered by water and it is not surprising that water travel played an important part in the early years of the settlement.

New Year Eve Past Century
/
Wichels, Ernest
[847]
[WICHELS-1964-847]
We discover what our forefathers did during the New Year season by reading Farragut's log books, and looking over the early editions of the Vallejo Chronicle. How did the weather behave here 100 years ago today?

Wichels, Ernest
[781]
[WICHELS-1964-781]
Like Santa Claus, the editor of an historical column has many helpers. Hardly a day passes that I do not receive some information which helps to bridge the gap between the past and the present.

The way it was: Poor road conditions in Solano
/
Goerke-Shrode, Sabine
[869]
[WAYITWAS-2008-869]
This story concludes the "Solano - The Way It Was" column. It has been a rewarding experience to delve into the lesser-known stories of our community. I am grateful to all readers for your suggestions, comments, critics and nice compliments. I also want to thank Reporter editor Diane Barney and its outstanding editors for their wonderful support over the past eight years.

Goosen did well by the city of Fairfield
/
Goerke-Shrode, Sabine
[564]
[WAYITWAS-2005-564]
In 1886, Henry Goosen opened a blacksmith shop and general hardware store in Cordelia. He had a strong background in well drilling, pumps, steam machinery and related areas. As such, he had become interested in the Fairfield Water Works, located on Empire Street behind the Courthouse. He was in the process of overhauling the aging machinery, when a devastating fire destroyed the plant on Christmas Eve 1901 [...]

A Bit Of This And That
/
Wichels, Ernest
[858]
[WICHELS-1964-858]
It rained this past week-considerably above November's 91-year average of about 1.80 inches. But earlier Vallejoans saw much more moisture than we've had. November of 1885 had 6.6 inches; November of 1926 a total of 6.2 inches. And 1875, 1892, 1913 and 1934 recorded 5-inch rainfalls in November.

Commerce ebbs, expands in Solano past
/
Delaplane, Kristin
[409]
[ECHOS-1998-409]
In 1873, Suisun City was enjoying its place as the hub of activity in the county. In that town, it was tradition to welcome in the New Year and ring out the old by ringing both the church and fire bells.

Area turned to eucalyptus tree
/
Goerke-Shrode, Sabine
[712]
[WAYITWAS-2007-712]
My last two columns explored how eucalyptus came to California around 1853, with Fairfield founder Captain Robert Waterman seemingly among the first pioneers to import seeds.

Memories of the Fairfield area
/
Bowen, Jerry
[198]
[WAYITWAS-2004-198]
Memoirs often provide valuable insight about the past that may seem of little importance when an individual first writes them. Today, with the last remains of the old company town of Cement rapidly disappearing under the onslaught of new development, a way of life is also being relegated to the dusty archives of history to be remembered only in the minds of a few old-timers and people who enjoy learning about the past.
