Orders For Mare Island
/
Wichels, Ernest
[772]
[WICHELS-1963-772]
We oldsters often date ourselves by the fashions we wear, by the tunes we hum, or by the furniture we insist on keeping. Today we are going to date the Mare Island Naval Shipyard. Most everyone knows that our great naval plant is 109 years old but it is interesting to read the thousands of Commandants' Orders and Notices which serve as milestones of the past century.

Great Depression caused hard times in Solano
/
Bowen, Jerry
[825]
[WAYITWAS-2008-825]
Today I saw an interesting front page from a United Kingdom newspaper, The Independent, showing a photo that may or may not be a modern soup line waiting for handouts. The headline blatantly shouts, "United States of America 2008; The Great Depression."

New Year Eve Past Century
/
Wichels, Ernest
[847]
[WICHELS-1964-847]
We discover what our forefathers did during the New Year season by reading Farragut's log books, and looking over the early editions of the Vallejo Chronicle. How did the weather behave here 100 years ago today?

The White Sulphur Spring
/
Wichels, Ernest
[850]
[WICHELS-1964-850]
The "day camps" at our Blue Rock Springs recreation spot now become a memory with the opening of another school semester. Some 60 years ago this time of the year marked the end of the "summer camp" for scores of Vallejo families.

/
Wichels, Ernest
[794]
[WICHELS-1964-794]
This past week Vallejo mourned, along with an ever-grateful nation, the passing of a great American --General of the Armies Douglas MacArthur. Significantly, these same days marked the 60th anniversary of another event which is important in the lives of Mare Island and Vallejo.

[WICHELS-1964-786]
Alfred W. Newman, a member of the governing body of Vallejo's Unified School District, presented a remarkable story of the public schools in this community at the November, 1963, meeting of the Solano County Historical Society.

Grandfather's New Year's Eve
/
Wichels, Ernest
[778]
[WICHELS-1963-778]
We've reviewed the New Year's Eve celebrations of earlier generations of Vallejoans. A half century and more ago there was one program which was inevitable. This was the formal grand ball attended by all of the officials and leaders in the community, usually followed by a generous meal sometime around midnight.

Christmas In Vallejo
/
Wichels, Ernest
[777]
[WICHELS-1963-777]
Christmas is the same over the years--the family reunions, the joy of the children, and the turkey on the table--but the manner of reporting it has changed. We went back into the old copies of the Vallejo Chronicle 70 to 90 years ago, and bring you the life of the city in those holidays.

The Sperry Pioneers
/
Wichels, Ernest
[770]
[WICHELS-1963-770]
The Sperry Division of General Mills in South Vallejo is undoubtedly Vallejo's oldest non-governmental enterprise, and is one of the larger private employers in Solano County (others, Yuba Manufacturing, Nut Tree, Gibson Publications). Today's story is a fascinating tale beginning with the gold rush, but Vallejo enters the picture in 1869.

The Origin Of Names
/
Wichels, Ernest
[769]
[WICHELS-1963-769]
Most of us take names for granted--we're speaking of geographical locations. Yet behind some of these names are interesting stories--oftentimes legends--which would fill pages of type. Today we'll mention a few in the local area.
