On Dec. 15 and 22, 1855, the Solano County Herald reprinted the last of the so-called "Shirley Letters." Louise Amelia Clappe chronicled her experiences at Rich Bar on the Feather River during 1852. This last letter was written in late November 1852, addressed to her sister, Molly.

My last column explored how the Christopher and Towson families celebrated their respective weddings amid close friends and relatives at the bride's home. Most weddings of that day were conducted in this quiet fashion. The wedding of Frank H. Buck and Annie Elizabeth Stevenson on April 29, 1886, on the other hand, was a large, elaborate affair.

This winter has not yet brought much cold or rainy weather, so that my holiday letter to shivering friends in Germany includes photos of roses in bloom. Yet this weather can change quickly, turning into heavy winter rains, such as Luzena Stanley Wilson and her family experienced in 1849 in Sacramento.
