Not so many years ago, the fruit ranchers living outside the city of Vacaville, if they happened to run out of flour or other household necessities during the rainy season, found it necessary to climb and hunch along on top of the fences to get in and out of town with their purchases on their backs.

This week, our communities will celebrate July 4th with a variety of parades, picnics and firework events. Similar celebrations took place more than a century ago, too, bringing residents together in large numbers. One of the more elaborate July 4 celebrations in Vacaville was held in 1898.

This is the continuation of the story of Stonedene and the Martin family in Suisun Valley. - Editor After Samuel Martin's death in 1885, his son, Henry, and daughter-in-law, Carrie Pittman, took over the management of the Martin ranch. They lived in the stone mansion that Carrie had named "Stonedene," the Scottish words meaning "House of Stone."

In the spring of 1879, staff from the Suisun City's Solano Republican set out to explore the countryside. Their trip started with a train ride to Bridgeport, present-day Cordelia. Along the route they viewed the orchards then in bloom. Once in Bridgeport they stopped in at each of the town's business establishments.
