1944 blast at Benicia arsenal shakes up Solano
/
Dingler, Nancy
[462]
[RETROSPECT-2000-462]
Windows shattered and walls cracked the night of July 17, 1944 throughout Solano County. Citizens of Fairfield and Suisun ran into the streets, fearing that the Japanese had penetrated U.S. defenses and were dropping bombs. Speculation ran the gamut from German v-rockets to the arsenal at Benicia blowing up.

Population lifted off after airfield built
/
Goerke-Shrode, Sabine
[728]
[WAYITWAS-2007-728]
Construction of the Fairfield-Suisun Army Airfield in 1943 brought a large number of new residents to the local communities, doubling population overnight. Calls went out for rentals and vacant rooms with only minimal results. With the base scheduled to open soon, personnel stationed there would bring their families as well.

Sea captains weighed their anchors in Solano
/
Goerke-Shrode, Sabine
[680]
[WAYITWAS-2006-680]
Sea captains played an important role in the development of the Fairfield and Suisun area. With its proximity to the Suisun Bay, it is no surprise that men like Captain Robert Waterman, Captain Archibald Ritchie and Captain Josiah Wing saw an opportunity to combine business skills with their knowledge of the sea.

Rockville grew into crossroads for early routes
/
Delaplane, Kristin
[242]
[ECHOS-1995-242]
Information for this article came from the Vacaville Historical Society, Solano Genealogical Society and Fairfield Public Library. The village of Rockville in the Green Valley Township was located in the general vicinity where the Susuine Indians had previously located their head tribal village. The Indians called this place Yul Yul, meaning the place of the setting sun. When the white man's disease, smallpox, hit in 1839, the tribe numbers were vastly depleted and the few surviving Suisunees left the area, many choosing the safety of the missions in Sonoma and San Jose. In later years Chief Solano returned to this sacred place, where he died and was buried.

Meet Cleo Gordon Elementary school's namesake

Dingler, Nancy

[RETROSPECT-2000-463]
Have you ever wondered how local places, like streets and schools get their names? For example, it is obvious that Fairfield High is named after the town, but did you know that Armijo High was named after the family that had the large Spanish land grant it sits on? Historically, people want to honor prominent, successful people by naming places for them.

Wartime proclamation reflected somber mood
/
Goerke-Shrode, Sabine
[738]
[WAYITWAS-2007-738]
My last column looked at the early years of the Fairfield-Suisun Airbase, a wartime response to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Although the local newspapers did not report much about the activities, local residents were eager to learn more about the "great flying field."

Sculptor vied for Chief Solano job
/
Bowen, Jerry
[127]
[WAYITWAS-2002-127]
A short article in the May 10, 1934 Solano Republican stated, "Chief Solano To Be Honored June 3 - In one of California's first gestures to the Indian, the 12-foot tall bronze statue of Chief Solano by William Gordon Huff, made possible by a state appropriation in 1933, will be unveiled at out-of-door ceremonies, where he will grace the top of a beautiful knoll north of the Highway (U.S. 40), four miles west of Fairfield, Sunday, June 3, at 2 p.m."
