Memories Of Holiday
/
Wichels, Ernest
[773]
[WICHELS-1963-773]
Next Thursday is Thanksgiving Day. It's a holiday, with pay, for most people. Noteworthy, the religious aspect of the day has been growing in recent years. Up until World War II it shared this significance with football games throughout the country--in Vallejo, too, for the Apaches observed a home-and-home schedule with the Eureka High School [...]

Reporter's Writers Now Have Added Chores
/
Rico, John
[896]
[RICO-1981-896]
THE COMPUTER AGE IS NOT FOR ME - When I started to set type back in 1924, and doing my small bit to help produce the Vacaville Reporter, little thought did I give to that day in 1981 when Publisher Richard Rico would unwrap a new typesetting system which is not in my bag of endeavors.

Wichels, Ernest

[WICHELS-1964-852]
It is difficult for most of us, living in the year 1964, to realize the advantages we possess over those available to Vallejo residents or Mare Island personnel just a hundred years ago. We take our freeways, radio and TV, dial telephones with direct connections to New York or Hawaii, automobiles, airplanes, etc., for granted.

The "day camps" at our Blue Rock Springs recreation spot now become a memory with the opening of another school semester. Some 60 years ago this time of the year marked the end of the "summer camp" for scores of Vallejo families.

Memorial Days In Vallejo
/
Wichels, Ernest
[802]
[WICHELS-1964-802]
Decoration Day was made a fixed celebration on May 5, 1868, when Commander-in-Chief John A. Logan, of the Grand Army of the Republic, issued a general order designating May 30, 1868, "for the purpose of strewing with flowers the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country." Some 15 years later the G.A.R. asked that the name of this annual observance be changed to "Memorial Day," but here in 1964-about 80 years later-we still find many old timers calling it "Decoration Day."

Horseless Carriages
/
Wichels, Ernest
[776]
[WICHELS-1963-776]
This past week we learned that another American-made automobile passes from the scene. Studebaker has been a by-word for over 60 years. But this has happened to automobiles in America just about 5,100 times in the past 65 years! We are indebted to Manager Charles Monahan of the local Calif. State AA Office for an informative pamphlet on American-made automobiles--from Abbott (1909) to Zust (1908).

Wichels, Ernest
[847]
[WICHELS-1964-847]
We discover what our forefathers did during the New Year season by reading Farragut's log books, and looking over the early editions of the Vallejo Chronicle. How did the weather behave here 100 years ago today?

Readers of earlier Vallejo newspapers saw items which seem strange to the subscribers of today, yet there is a great deal of similarity in some of the problems both then and now.
