Buildings That Are Old, New
/
Wichels, Ernest
[807]
[WICHELS-1964-807]
Several days ago the Casa de Vallejo was heavily damaged by fire. The blaze was confined to the wooden, or eastern portion of the structure. The younger generation is undoubtedly of the opinion that this has always been a hotel-but less than 50 years ago it served an entirely different purpose.

Early Solano
/
Wichels, Ernest
[784]
[WICHELS-1964-784]
A common human weakness is to predict the future. Sometimes the vision we see in the crystal ball may, by coincidence, come true. The editor of the Vallejo Recorder, in July and August of 1867, published a series of articles on Solano County communities and speculated on their development.

[WICHELS-1963-774]
Vallejoans shared the grief of the world and of the nation following last week's tragedy. With heartfelt reverence, our citizens worshiped in their churches, closed shop, displayed the flag in mourning, and many unashamedly cried.

Delaplane, Kristin

Last week: The discovery of Mare Island, how it got its name and finally being selected as the site of a West Coast Navy yard. Information for this article came from the Vacaville Heritage Council and Shipyard Historian's files. [195]
[WAYITWAS-2003-195]
We like to reminisce about the "good old days" and indeed many of the earlier times were in fact just that.

SOMETHING TO PONDER OVER - In less than two weeks the 36th anniversary of two of the most controversial days in the history of the world will be observed. Those were the days when president Harry Truman gave his approval for the dropping of an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 1945, and the second on Nagasaki on August 9.

[WICHELS-1964-858]
It rained this past week-considerably above November's 91-year average of about 1.80 inches. But earlier Vallejoans saw much more moisture than we've had. November of 1885 had 6.6 inches; November of 1926 a total of 6.2 inches. And 1875, 1892, 1913 and 1934 recorded 5-inch rainfalls in November.

Then, And Nowadays

Wichels, Ernest
[857]
[WICHELS-1964-857]
When one is interested in the earlier years of Vallejo and Solano County, it seems that every issue of the current Times-Herald or Evening News-Chronicle contains at least a dozen stories that lead directly to similar events some 50 to 100 years ago.
