Messengers Of 1912-1914
/
Wichels, Ernest
[851]
[WICHELS-1964-851]
This community and this county are saddened by the passing, last week, of Harry V. Soanes--a leading business, civic and philanthropic leader and a citizen who truly helped to spark the progress of Vallejo during the present generation.

NOTE: This is the original notification of the beginning of the "Pages From the Past" history column in 1963. A sparkling column of personal reminiscences and historical lore of the North and Central Bay Areas, will begin in Sunday's Times-Herald.

[WICHELS-1964-786]
Alfred W. Newman, a member of the governing body of Vallejo's Unified School District, presented a remarkable story of the public schools in this community at the November, 1963, meeting of the Solano County Historical Society.

Grandfather's New Year's Eve
/
Wichels, Ernest
[778]
[WICHELS-1963-778]
We've reviewed the New Year's Eve celebrations of earlier generations of Vallejoans. A half century and more ago there was one program which was inevitable. This was the formal grand ball attended by all of the officials and leaders in the community, usually followed by a generous meal sometime around midnight.

Santa Eulalia find historically significant
/
Bowen, Jerry
[690]
[WAYITWAS-2007-690]
In my last column I diverted a little from the story when the sink was identified as a sacrarium and helped identify the stone portion of the "Canevascini Winery" as possibly the original Santa Eulalia Chapel building and its significance as a historical site.

Historical Sites Marked
/
Wichels, Ernest
[811]
[WICHELS-1964-811]
Our readers, like all Solano and Napa County residents, are inveterate motorists. One can meet drivers of local automobiles on any given day in almost any spot in California. Along with the highway safety signs, directional signs, etc., one does not travel far without seeing this one: "Historical Marker, 500 Feet."

Submariner MacArthur
/
Wichels, Ernest
[794]
[WICHELS-1964-794]
This past week Vallejo mourned, along with an ever-grateful nation, the passing of a great American --General of the Armies Douglas MacArthur. Significantly, these same days marked the 60th anniversary of another event which is important in the lives of Mare Island and Vallejo.

Problems Not New
/
Wichels, Ernest
[783]
[WICHELS-1964-783]
Too frequently we read of some "new" development to improve the economy; or hear someone wonder what has happened to modern youth; or see a reference to the shipyard "crisis." In reviewing the pages of one hundred years of Vallejo newspapers we come to the inevitable conclusion there is really nothing new.

Horseless Carriages
/
Wichels, Ernest
[776]
[WICHELS-1963-776]
This past week we learned that another American-made automobile passes from the scene. Studebaker has been a by-word for over 60 years. But this has happened to automobiles in America just about 5,100 times in the past 65 years! We are indebted to Manager Charles Monahan of the local Calif. State AA Office for an informative pamphlet on American-made automobiles--from Abbott (1909) to Zust (1908).

Law was passed closing saloons on election day to quell rioting
/
Goerke-Shrode, Sabine
[763]
[WAYITWAS-2007-763]
Our recent local elections with low voter turnout and disinterested citizens had me look at earlier elections in Solano County. With today's well-regulated and orderly campaign and voting system in mind, 19th century elections read more like a riot.
