Bowen, Jerry
[65]
[WAYITWAS-2001-65]
Sometimes events in a person's life are so indelibly imprinted on their mind that they can remember the tiniest of details for the rest of their life. So it was on the morning of May 16, 1969, as I drove from Napa to work at Mare Island. After working in the inside Weapons Electronics Shop 36 for two years, I was finally transferred to the waterfront to work on the submarine, Guitarro, SSN-665. That is where I wanted to be [...]

History Repeats
/
Wichels, Ernest
[860]
[WICHELS-1964-860]
Anniversaries do have a habit of repeating themselves. Last Tuesday's Chronicle featured an illustrated story of the demolition of the slip of the Mare Island Ferry Co. at the foot of Georgia Street. Since the days of Farragut (1854) this area has been the departure point of passengers bound for the naval shipyard.

Buildings That Are Old, New
/
Wichels, Ernest
[807]
[WICHELS-1964-807]
Several days ago the Casa de Vallejo was heavily damaged by fire. The blaze was confined to the wooden, or eastern portion of the structure. The younger generation is undoubtedly of the opinion that this has always been a hotel-but less than 50 years ago it served an entirely different purpose.

/
Wichels, Ernest
[804]
[WICHELS-1964-804]
Our interesting county has had many pioneer settlements which, in the main, have disappeared with the march of time. Some, like Tremont, Batavia, Maine Prairie, Silveyville are memories. Others, like Collinsville, Denverton, Elmira, Birds Landing-and even Cordelia, are only a shadow of their former size and influence.

[RICO-1979-937]
NOT TOO LONG AGO - JUST 100 YEARS - Back in 1879, Wood, Alley and Co. of Oakland published what is perhaps the most comprehensive history of Solano County ever assembled up to that era. Historian J. P [...]

[WICHELS-1965-842]
In 1883 the Congress passed the Anti-Debris Act, which was meant to curb the damage wrought by hydraulic mining. In California it was commonly called placer mining. But it was not until Judge Lorenzo rendered his famous decision on Jan. 9, 1884, that hydraulic mining practically ceased in the Sierra Nevada.
