Early Vallejo Race Tracks
/
Wichels, Ernest
[806]
[WICHELS-1964-806]
The Solano County Fair is here and the horses are running! This is a young Fair but many Solano and Napa residents may have the impression that racing is "new" to these counties. Have you ever heard of Vallejo's Hollywood Track, or Vallejo's Cyclodrome, or Napa's Race Track?

Graduates Of Early Vallejo
/
Wichels, Ernest
[805]
[WICHELS-1964-805]
Today, a high school education is basic. It is considered the very minimum training to face life's problems and challenges. This past week 540 young men and women were graduated from the Vallejo Senior High School; 348 from Hogan Senior High; a total of 888 for what is undoubtedly a record graduation for our city.

/
Bowen, Jerry
[151]
[WAYITWAS-2003-151]
In my last column, we left the Barbours and the Alfords in Sonoma, building homes after a rigorous trip across the continent to California. A chance meeting with another Solano County historical figure, Thomas O. Larkin, resulted in a complete change of plans for the two families.

Ranch Towns In Two Areas
/
Wichels, Ernest
[854]
[WICHELS-1964-854]
Most people think of Vallejo strictly a shipyard city. Many find it difficult to believe that once it qualified as a "ranch town." Ranchowners, the hundreds of employes in dairy operations, cattle and sheep raising, and grain and hay harvests, formed a vital segment of Vallejo's economy in early days.

Dusts Of Early Vallejo
/
Wichels, Ernest
[812]
[WICHELS-1964-812]
As Parish Bros. bulldozers and steam shovels level the blocks of the Redevelopment area in southwest Vallejo, they do more than merely create dust and dirt in the downtown stores.

Days Of May 114 Years Ago
/
Wichels, Ernest
[799]
[WICHELS-1964-799]
Many things have occurred in Vallejo's 114 years of existence. Every day must be an anniversary of some event in our community life. One way to dip into the pages of the past is to recall earlier happenings in the merry month of May.

Gen. Vallejo sets out to tame the territories
/
Delaplane, Kristin
[251]
[ECHOS-1995-251]
First in a series Information for this article came from the Vacaville Heritage Council, Solano Genealogical Society and Solano Historian. Gen. Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, born in 1808, was to become the most prominent man in Northern California. He could date his ancestors back to the days of Columbus, when Alonzo Vallejo, admiral to the Spanish King, escorted Columbus back to Spain.

In my last column I wrote, "Several witnesses in the land case testified that John Wolfskill built a small house, presumably a temporary shelter, within a few days of his arrival on the grant and that it was a wattle or a palizada."
