In 1977, Ron Limbaugh interviewed Yee Ah Chong, the son of Yee Gim Wo, for the Vacaville Heritage project. Luzena Stanley Wilson and her husband, Mason Wilson, are two names that resonate through Vacaville's early history. The couple arrived in California with their two toddlers in 1849, attracted by the Gold Rush. They experienced the hardships of the rough society of Sacramento and Nevada City before finally settling in the fertile Vaca Valley in 1851.

In 1849 the California gold rush was in full swing with people from all over the world headed to the land that was sure to make them rich. But not all were so inclined when they saw the fertile valleys of the Suisun. Others, not finding the riches they felt they so richly deserved for their arduous labor remembered the lushness of the valleys of Suisun they passed through on their way to the mines.

There are few recordings of how early Solano County settlers prepared for or celebrated the Christmas season. Customs surely varied widely based on each family's immigration background. Taking a day off from work and having the means to create a well-cooked meal likely were the highlights for early pioneers.

Construction of the Fairfield-Suisun Army Airfield in 1943 brought a large number of new residents to the local communities, doubling population overnight. Calls went out for rentals and vacant rooms with only minimal results. With the base scheduled to open soon, personnel stationed there would bring their families as well.
