Memorial Days In Vallejo
/
Wichels, Ernest
[802]
[WICHELS-1964-802]
Decoration Day was made a fixed celebration on May 5, 1868, when Commander-in-Chief John A. Logan, of the Grand Army of the Republic, issued a general order designating May 30, 1868, "for the purpose of strewing with flowers the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country." Some 15 years later the G.A.R. asked that the name of this annual observance be changed to "Memorial Day," but here in 1964-about 80 years later-we still find many old timers calling it "Decoration Day."

In the spring of 1863, a decision was made in the case of George Dingley vs. John O'Connor, and the sheriff was to sell Dingley's Mill property on the 24th of March. Other records indicate that perhaps this sale did not go forth.

[RICO-1981-895]
Aditty was frequently recited here by youngsters in our Yesteryear when the many male Chinese who resided here sported a hairdo known as a queue (pigtail). And, too, that's when long hair was an oddity on any young boy or man.

Vallejo's shot as state capital is short-lived
/
Delaplane, Kristin
[233]
[ECHOS-1995-233]
Information for this article came from the Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum and Vacaville Heritage Council - First of two parts. During the age of the American Indians, the region around Vallejo was known for its wild cattle and horses that fed on the area's high oats. No evidence has ever turned up to show that there were Indian settlements there, but it does appear tribes came from Suisun Valley and other locations to dig for shellfish and hunt the cattle and other game.

Walnut orchards part of Solano since 1930s
/
Goerke-Shrode, Sabine
[815]
[WAYITWAS-2008-815]
One of my fond memories of growing up in Germany includes spending dark winter nights with my family, reading to each other while sharing a special treat - a bowl of California walnuts. My brother and I would try to shell the nuts so that the two halves of the shells remained undamaged. These half shells eventually would be used to fashion little boats, baskets, figurines and other crafts.

The next time you are in the area bounded by York, Santa Clara, Maine and Sacramento streets in Vallejo, you will be near a long-gone historic site. Back in 1852 a two-story building sporting two flags dominated a hill that was centrally located between those streets.
